www.woai.com... seems they are gonna put some of the tax revenue twords schools so that should quiet down the "for the children" people

from washington some complications are arising as far as if they can tax it seattle.cbslocal.com...

Bellingham, Wash. (CBS SEATTLE) – Washington State should be barred from collecting thousands of dollars in state and local marijuana taxes from an authorized marijuana dispensary and its owner because there are already pending federal charges, a lawsuit filed in federal court claims. Martin Nickerson Jr. has sued Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, Attorney General Bob Ferguson and state tax chief Carol Nelson in federal court, arguing that he cannot be taxed on the state and local levels because he’s already being federally prosecuted, Courthouse News Service reports. His attorneys argue that he is unable to defend himself from state tax charges because he would be forced to waive his Fifth Amendment rights by responding to the local tax charges. The states of Washington and Colorado have legalized recreational and medical marijuana sales, creating a tangled web of legal conflicts between the federal and state levels.
so there are still these complications to deal with but i see far more good coming from this, lets just see how long it takes for washington and Colorado prison populations to decline

www.cnn.com... so far feds seem to be respecting the POTUS wishes on the matter but there is that whole hubub with the hemp seeds

www.huffingtonpost.com...

Text The Drug Enforcement Administration has seized a batch of seeds that were intended to be part of the launch of Kentucky's legal hemp industry following congressional legalization of the crop for research purposes. The DEA has offered a wide variety of explanations to Kentucky officials perplexed at the seizure. "They're interpreting the law a hundred different ways," Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner James Comer (R) told HuffPost. "The only way they're not interpreting it is the way it actually reads." Comer said that he met with Kentucky Sens. Mitch McConnell (R) and Rand Paul (R) this past weekend and relayed to them the DEA's claim that it was simply following the intent of the recently passed farm bill, which includes a passage championed by McConnell that allows colleges and state departments of agriculture to cultivate hemp for research purposes.
so seems they are still trying to play the tired old mantra of HEMP bad sadly with all the uses hemp can give us

www.jesus-is-savior.com... some Christians seem to be ok with hemp/pot and according to some tales the baby jesus was anointed with cannibas oil by those old wise dudes

Until 1883, 75-90% of all paper in the U.S. was made with hemp. Hemp seed was the # 1-selling bird feed; 4 million pounds were sold in the U.S. in 1937. In the mid-to-late 1800's the 2nd & 3rd most commonly used medications were concentrated cannabis extracts and resins (a.k.a. hashish). A bridge in the south of France dated at 500-700 A.D. was built with a mixture of hemp. In 1941 Henry Ford built a car with a plastic made from hemp and wheat straw. Until 1937 70-90% of all rope and twine was made with hemp. Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew hemp on their plantations. In 1850 the U.S. Census reported 8,327 hemp plantation of at least 2000 acres in size. Not counted were thousands of smaller crops. The original Levi Strauss jeans were made from hemp. In 1942 the U.S. government strongly encouraged hemp cultivation to help with the war effort, going so far as to produce a film entitled "Hemp For Victory". The version of the Declaration of Independence released on July 4, 1776 was written on hemp.

2,737 BCE First recorded use of cannabis as medicine by Emperor Shen Neng of China. 2,000-800 BCE Bhang (dried cannabis leaves, seeds and stems) is mentioned in the Hindu sacred text Atharvaveda (Science of Charms) as "Sacred Grass", one of the five sacred plants of India. It is used by medicinally and ritually as an offering to Shiva. 1,500 BCE Cannabis cultivated in China for food and fiber. Scythians cultivate cannabis and use it to weave fine hemp cloth. 700-600 BCE The Zoroastrian Zendavesta, an ancient Persian religious text of several hundred volumes refers to bhang as the "good narcotic." 600 BCE Hemp rope appears in southern Russia. 700-300 BCE Scythian tribes leave Cannabis seeds as offerings in royal tombs. 500 BCE Scythian couple die and are buried with two small tents covering containers for burning incense. Attached to one tent stick was a decorated leather pouch containing wild Cannabis seeds. This closely matches the stories told by Herodotus. The gravesite, discovered in the late 1940s, was in Pazryk, northwest of the Tien Shan Mountains in modern-day Khazakstan. Hemp is introduced into Northern Europe by the Scythians. An urn containing leaves and seeds of the Cannabis plant, unearthed near Berlin, is found and dated to about this time. Use of hemp products spread throughout northern Europe. 430 BCE Herodotus reports on both ritual and recreation use of Cannabis by the Scythians (Herodotus The Histories 430 B.C. trans. G. Rawlinson). 200 BCE Hemp rope appears in Greece. Chinese Book of Rites mentions hemp fabric. 100 BCE First evidence of hemp paper, invented in China. 100-0 BCE The psychotropic properties of Cannabis are mentioned in the newly compiled herbal Pen Ts'ao Ching.
and to those that say its not medicine well lots of people through out history would disagree on the matter

www.alternet.org...$1_billion_a_year cost of arresting pot offenders

American taxpayers are now spending more than a billion dollars per year to incarcerate its citizens for pot. That's according to statistics recently released by the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Statistics.

norml.org... te-pot-offenders 1 in 8 drug offenders in us prisons are solely there because of pot

Nearly one in eight drug prisoners in America are behind bars for marijuana-related offenses, according to data released this week by the US Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). The BJS study, "Drug Use and Dependence, State and Federal Prisoners, 2004," reports that 12.7 percent of state inmates and 12.4 percent of federal inmates incarcerated for drug violations are serving time for marijuana offenses. Combining these percentages with separate US Department of Justice (DOJ) statistics on the total number of state and federal drug prisoners (BJS October 2005 Bulletin: "Prisoners in 2004" -- NCJ 210677) suggests that there are now approximately 33,655 state inmates and 10,785 federal inmates incarcerated for marijuana offenses.

Problems?

Yeah they got em

On Tuesday, Dr. Michael Distefano testified that Colorado Children’s Hospital has treated seven juveniles for acute illnesses stemming from ingesting edible forms of marijuana since the law went into effect.

And, on Monday night, before Distefano appeared before the House Committee on Health, Insurance, and Environment on two bills to rein in recreational marijuana, a mother of three from Denver on the phone with a 911 operator about the hallucinations being experienced by her husband was killed when he shot her in the head.

State Rep. Frank McNulty (R-Highlands Ranch) says that achieving equivalences between marijuana from plants with the concentrates used in edibles will probably cost the state at least $100,000 to implement, but that every passing day is giving lawmakers reasons why some tightening is necessary.

The reports of edible marijuana making children sick and possibly playing a role in Kristine Kirk’s murder coincides with a new study showing that casual marijuana use can cause changes in the brain. Published in the Journal of Neuroscience, a 10-page report on the study says that brain alterations occur in young adults using marijuana before any dependence develops.

The report’s author, Dr. Hans Breiter of Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital, said that longer-term studies are needed to see if brain changes cause any symptoms over time.

The impact prohibition has on society in the form of prisons, gangs, crime, economy are far far far worse then anything these drugs can do to any individual.

Archaic.

We throw away enough money a year on this stupidity to fund healthcare and education across the board.

We lose almost 100 billion a year liquidity as money is shipped over seas to cartels from Russia, Ukraine, Ndranghetta, Columbia, Nicaragua, Mexico and many many others.

Stop this utter stupidity in its tracks and make it an issue of personal responsibility.

Don't come here taunting your welfare state nanny state bull# while supporting draconian laws like prohibition because people can't handle responsibility.

Can't have it both ways.

Thus post is not directed at you Benrl I agree with you.

And this concersation needs to happen on ATS. It's utterly rediculous that it violates t and c.

Plus the other huge advantage is, if registered legit buisnesses are selling it the the money stays out the hands of the gangs and cartels.

Not sure if next bits T&C friendly so snipp it if it isnt.

But i dont know about the USA but us brits have a problem with designer highs. To circumnavigate drugs laws the dealers slightly alter the chemical structure of a drug so its a new chemical and falls outside regulations. Problem is each time you do it you end up with a more unpridictable and dangrous mix. This has resulted in many deaths and health issues.

Now if like in colarado those highs come from a regulated source and legit buisness, shady practises like above will become less popular and profitable.

Exactly.

Plus now the DEA doesnt have to chase pot heads it can concentrare on the real problem drugs like herorin, co cain and meth that are pretty nasty things and do cause suffering.

I wonder how things will look in ten years, remember if it has bad sides, it shouldn't be compared to other products with bad sides, it should be added a long side them.

Well only time will tell now...Good luck.

Better still, watching mods fight it out

This is ridiculous. This is best political decision I've seen made in the US in a very long time. Those opposing it must be old and too set in their ways.

There are way too many benefits for legalization than there are for prohibition.

I think, its a generation that grew up with Government being always right, and looking out for whats good and right.

Despite the fact that lie was wrong even back than, they still cling to the propaganda of youth,

Hell, I still long for a good ole knee jerk Soviets as the Bad guy response, but being a reasoning human being I can see past propaganda, and Understand, everyone is selling an agenda of some kind.

Prohibition, is the sale of the Prison system as a good thing to Americans.

Some still see the propaganda that sold that to us, the rest just see the plain ugly lie.

Profit, always means more than the Human cost of policy in America.

www.mmyvofficial.org... this is what anti hemp/pot propaganda looks like for those wanting to see some of the idiocy they argue as "facts'

Each and every violent death in the the history of human’s existence can and has been directly linked to consumption of the cannabis sativa plant. The only way humans become violent and lust for blood is through smoking, snorting, injecting or eating marijuana. Below is the total 2012 marijuana induced death toll for the world’s 50 most populated countries: 1. China - 63,463,094 2. India - 48,293,129 3. United States - 10,029,023 4. Indonesia - 9,032,198 5. Brazil - 6,493,294 6. Pakistan - 5,393,392 7. Nigeria - 5,392,042 8. Bangladesh - 5,298,931 9. Russia - 5,242,682 10. Japan - 5,212,092 11. Mexico - 5,128,918 12. Philippines - 5,126,928 13. Vietnam - 4,934,562 14. Ethiopia - 4,823,932 15. Egypt - 4,812,648 16. Germany - 4,629,564 17. Turkey - 4,583,982 18. Iran - 4,561,606 19. Congo, Dem. Rep. - 4,209,012 20. Thailand - 4,093,192 21. France - 4,085,013 22. United Kingdom - 4,012,562 23. Italy - 3,982,947 24. Burma - 3,964,091 25. Korea, South - 3,924,564
lol as you can see the death tolls listed are insane and so overblown its not even funny .and of sad yet hilarious note they seem to think that pot is the number one source of violence on the planet as they seem to claim that pot kills more people in china a year then died in ww2 at hands of japanese .sadly some people see these sites and assume that they know what they are talking about and thus the propaganda remains in full force and this is why legalization is such a long drawn out process. in its history it has gone from being mandated by federal government being grown to demonized into the "next evil thing" hell it built and funded this nation and we even wrote the declaration of independence on the stuff

solely posted this to illustrate the propanda out there on this subject and in no way resembles my beliefs on the matter

wiki.answers.com...=1 more accurate info

but even the cdc is pretty clear on the matter marijuana alone has rarely if ever lead to some ones death

drugwarfacts.org.../30#sthash.WvZo8Mes.dpbs from 2010 but it lists all cause of deaths in usa

Unlike cannabis that can be grown localy, Cocaine and herorine all have there sources in pretty shaddy places, even if made legal cartels and gangs have strangle holds on these, legelisatiin would just give these groups free rein.

No i dont think possesion should be punished even for the harder stuff but I am all for the imprisoment of gang and cartels without mercy.

No one here has even Questioned the Fact that the Sale and Distribution of this now Legalized Substance in Colorado is being Taxed . Why Tax it at All ? It's just a Weed . Why aren't there Taxes on Dandilions or Poison Ivy ? Oh I get it , they don't get you High . I see this as just another Politically Motivated move to Fleece the American People out of their hard earned Money as usual .

That's the point. Have us begging for it so badly we would love super high taxes.

It's the same thing with oil, tobacco. Everything.

Tobacco they say it causes cancer and everyone is addicted so they tax it out the rear and we ok it because we think it causes cancer.

We're running out of oil so we need high taxes on it.

Blah blah blah.
