Thats a damn good run to do it in 4hrs flat with 4 guys. Sometimes when the gods are smiling and everything goes right its amazing how quick you can do things isn't it? I recall doing a CF-6 on a 767 in under 8hrs without too much trouble but that's a bigger motor and requires more men, plus it probably didn't need a nose cowl swap but I cant remember.

The difference between that change and the airlines and their unions was actually painful to watch. A CF6 in 8 hours is pretty impressive in itself.

We were watching EOD, I'm looking at the nose of the missile, over at my father, at the missile, finally looked at him and said, "You realise that if it fires it's going right between us, right". He looked at me, and said, "Make you nervous?"

You should make a thread ‘Zaphs stories’ I bet you have right tales to tell. Just this little one made me chuckle

If you go dumpster diving we have a couple There I Was threads. Bunch of stuff from both my father's and my time on the ramp.

God I remember those threads from years ago. Must be talking 12-14 years back. I still remember the one where your dad had to play aircraft tetris on a ramp one time, and people said it couldn't be done. But when he finished everyone cheered.

Yeah, those are the ones. That was the B-52 that was late for the Open House. They were supposed to stop and tow into position, but he decided to just taxi them in. The Vice Wing Commander and the guy working Ground were up in the tower watching and waiting for the kaboom.

My personal favorite will always be the F-15 driver that said, "We're going today even if I lose an engine on takeoff". Everyone around him took a big step back.

Yeah some airline operators are the worst. There used to be a lot of demarcation issues with US based operators. From memory that CF-6 had basically 2 crews thrown onto it, but as you know you can only fit in so many people under the cowls. Plus many were extremely experienced old dogs who knew every trick in the book. I think we had it on, re-connected, lifting gear GSE off, spin leak check on the fuel lines done and cowls closed ready for an idle run. Think the only other thing left to do was that crisscross lockwire for the hydraulic line blanket sock thingy and IDG level chk. Best I know of a T900 on a 380 being done was by my old crew in about 8.5hrs without a cowl swap. Plus I dont think they took more than about 15-20mins for a break the whole time. THAT was impressive a everything went unbelievably well and like clockwork.

They used to kill me with the unions. You could watch them change an engine on the hard stands, and they'd use one crew, and take 5 days. An "emergency engine change" would fly in 45-50 people to do it in 12-14 hours.

That footage is from an airshow in the UK, best answer I can give is I honestly dont know why the escort other than its an airshow. Ive not seen them escorted at any fly over Ive witnessed.

The video taken back in the 90s I believe. I remember being at Mildenhall when I think it was the first air show that the B2 made an appearance (I could be wrong). Back then I’d say the B2 was what everyone thought to be the super secret bomber. Everyone had already heard of the F117 especially as the shows were after the gulf war. But the B2 was the latest in secret aircraft.

I believe the escorts where simply for show, with the F15s probably out from Lakenheath they probably just thought it would be good to join up with the B2 for the fly past. Only other thought I had, the F15s were a security escort. With the B2 making its first public showing, despite it being over friendly territory perhaps the added escort was a just in case thing although I highly doubt it.

Seeing that video bring back memories of the B1 literally making your insides shake and the high speed past watching approach, the silence and then ROOOOOOAAARRRR!! God I miss old school air shows

It was an airshow. A lot of times airshows, especially in other countries, will have local jets escort them so they can get pretty pictures of them with the B-2. Nothing more than that.
