Out of curiosity, are you aware that you are speaking of Mother Nature as a conscious force, and therefore you are speaking about a 'God' and not
nature anymore.
The amount of people who genuinely do this (not implying you are specifically) is staggering lol. The same people often call themselves atheists as
well.
Nature cannot choose to do anything with a will, so if homosexuality was a product of nature, it would be by complete chance. At least, that's the
'mainstream' scientific view.
That is to say, one human would through utter sheer and random chance (since that is how evolution works) experience a mutation at genetic inception
causing homosexuality (if it is completely a facet of genetics) and by sheer chance would also manage to pass this onto the offspring hence prolonging
the life of the gene.
Of course, this usually brings around the issue of "how did the gene spread so strongly/how is it still around because by the very virtue of the
effect of the mutation it would suggest the person isn't very likely to pass on the trait via reproduction?".
It is a fair question and I'm sure there's an assortment of logical to completely nuts theories on the matter.
Logically, it should like you say, cause a population regulation. This couldn't have really been the case though considering the context of the
question up there^.
This is all assuming its completely genetical as well but we don't really know. We're also assuming there's one 'degree' of homosexuality when in fact
there is probably a multitude of reasons explaining all acts and desires of homosexuality.
Peace
