I'm a little split about it:

I think that if it's the students free time they should be allowed to read whatever they want as long as they aren't causing problems, however, on the other hand, I also think that academia is propagandized enough and religion should play no part in public schools. Our childrens minds are sick enough.

Yea sick enough but certainly not due to an overexposure to private bible reading in public schools. So it must be the regular fair of the public most sacred and honorable institution to promote moral and intellectual sickness elsewhere.

Oh but by all means let the state at all levels promote tolerance and free thinking in all things religious and philosophical! Let them teach all about the Holocaust but never mention the same people wrote and preserved the bible and were really persecuted because of their association with it.

Yep, yep, teach them all about the civil rights movement but certainly leave out how much of the justification and energy for the struggle came from the bible and its ministers, from churches, from the understanding that we were all "created" equal and endowed by our creator with certain rights.

Yep, preach on you holy high priests of the public educational system, den of thieves and collection of hypocrites.

For crying out loud, it is a historical book!

Yah, lets ban all historical books?

A historical book with a lot of fantasy thrown in.

Well just stick around then while the children learn about the easter bunny, santa, and all the bs during halloween. The public schools are foundational promoters of these classic bs stories.

The public school systems were put into use in America to rip control of children from the church. In and around the 18th (17th?) century only rich people afforded a good education which was provided by tutors. When public school came into being the church had almost complete control over childhood education since they had schools and orphanages across the country that offered up free education, (and a very hefty dose of god mixed in) which would sign up the kids to a life of patronage.

It isn't perfect now, but sure wasn't before either...

Case update for the record.....

The school's "story" has changed.....

Updating our previous story about a fifth grader told by his teacher he could not read his Bible during free time, school lawyers for Broward County Public Schools have now gotten involved and changed their story.

They now say that the time in question is not free reading time, but instead Accelerated Reader Program time. During this period, students can only read certain approved books, and the Bible is not among them. Hence, Broward County Public Schools will continue banning the Bible.
