This type of "new law" if enacted might even wake up progressives and liberals who like to have parties, gather with friends, or have a home wedding, or even a tupperware party

The day people accepted that people cannot build a house on their own property except with special permission by their government, is the day freedom died in America. If you pay annual rent to the local mafia lords (the city government) then you don't fully own your property either... you merely rent it from the government. How is something "yours" when someone can take it away at any time if you stop paying them money? Obviously the best you can say is you are part owner. Its communism. In America today we are witnessing the failure of communism. Capitalism died when FDR became president and socialist security forced its way into people's lives against their will.

We should outlaw gatherings of more than 1 politician as a likely danger to the people's rights.
Ditto for lobbyists.

Since many neighborhoods have their own HOA, wouldn't this be better left to small groups of home owners to make their own rules for their specific neighborhoods? Some neighborhoods do have some problems with frequent, loud parties but many don't.

I've lived next to some obnoxious ass neighbors that make me almost understand the law. Having 20+ cars parked caddywhompus up and down the street (effectively stealing parking spaces of actual residents) horribly obnoxious drunks vomiting, being loud, doing drugs, littering all over the place, playing the music at window rattling levels...

There needs to be a compromise between this complete nonsense and having the neighbors continue destroying your night and property value. Cops show up, quiets down for a bit, starts getting out of control. Cops show back up, same thing. Maybe give noise ordinance laws and the like some teeth to start with.

I live in a residential zone, not a commercial zone.
If a valid personal reason can be established for such a gathering then thats fine, but over 49 people regularly, that sounds commercial.

Maybe the regulations should give valid reasonsn as to purpose

That's 10 cars of people. I could see getting that numbers if you had a garden party or reception in your back yard. might get three or four cars in the driveway, and six parked outside.

The danger is that they start reducing that number from 49 down to 39, or 29, and do the same as they do with the number of rounds an ammunition clip can hold.

I wonder if they will define "gathering" differently in the coming months or years.
IF the economy was to tumble and unemployment gets worse, would this possible "law/ordinance" prevent others from allowing family and friends from being able to stay their?

This would sure complicate matters when it comes to helping potentially homeless.

Especially if they were to selectively target these groups for enforcement action. Seems like they want a war.

Of course, we're all speculating. Maybe some lawmaker lives next to a chronic party animal and is abusing their position.

It's ridiculous that they'd even try this.

That being said, I think it should be left to the police to handle in any given situation. My neighbor is about 30 feet from me, and if they were having 50 people over all the time, it would be a problem. A- it's nice out. I want to keep my windows open without hearing 50 people. B- I have a newborn that sleeps a lot.

I don't get the impression that this is some part of an over-arching plot by TPTB. It appears to be an act of some 'local' governing body putting forth careless legisation. Careless legislation, without thought of consequence, can be as dangerous as purposeful over-reach and suppression.

I live in Virginia, and this sickens and confuses me.

People in Va generally love any excuse for a get together. The church events alone would put people over the proposed limit - but what about the family reunions, class reunions, birthdays, weddings, bridal showers, etc.?

I do NOT see this spreading to other counties, even if Fairfax does completely lose its collective mind and pass this legislation.

Kind of what I was thinking as well. This would be part of a larger movement to reduce the size of gatherings on a Federal Level at some point.

Since the Snowden leaks, the one thing that I believe is at the root of the NSA's spying is that they are trying to prevent people from their right to assemble.

There are already noise ordinance laws in place. I don't see how the absence of the right to assembly will help the scenario that you're referring to any more than the presence of the right to assembly coupled with the noise ordinance laws.

It's not really about noise though. It's a public nuisance when one of your neighbors regularly takes up all the parking on your block.
