Thank you for having me as a caller. Garth is correct nuclear weapons may not render an area uninhabitable for 10 00 years but that is a very interesting side topic . Beyond this to go into why the Russians wouldn't use nukes is another side topic. In short in any future conflict the Russian military doctrine will be to use there 6 to 1 or 10 to 1 manpower and material advantage to overwhelm Nato forces without the left over radiation. Nukes are also an area weapon that can be used tactically as opposed to there cold war role of MAD or creating a nuclear winter. So in short in any future global conflict will see Iran and North Korea uses nukes against Israel and South Korea respectively.

In recent history I would argue that the Ukraine was a recognized part of the Soviet Union , something I failed to summarize on Air. Nationalist sentiments in the Eastern Europe are old hat. In fact at the start of Operation Barbarossa some very misguided people saw the Germans as liberators. Since the end of the Cold War the former Eastern block countries have had a taste of independence/nationalism that they won't want to give up.

In the next five years Lativa in the north of Eastern Europe will be in the site of the Russians as well as Moldova. Clearly if someone in the future gets a one way ticket to Siberia they may not be in an Gulag with wire and watch towers. But if the people or person in question is not free to leave they are imprisoned .

Had it been a fair vote it could have well been a 50/50 split which would have posed many issues , none as bad as what is coming down the pipeline. How do you have a free and fair election when your country institutions like the police cannot cope with civil unrest? Had the the majority of people voted for the Crimea to be returned for Russia in a free and fair election I would have had no problem with the outcome.
