Gang allies of Andre Moral, a drug 'kingpin' who was slain by police in Rio's Chatuba slum district opened fire and threw a grenade inside the disco after management refused to turn down the music in honour of their slain leader. 39 people have been presented at Getulio Vargas Hospital with various injuries, however no deaths have been reported.

Moral was the ninth alleged bandit slain by Rio police since Friday.

Human rights groups accuse Rio police of excessive brutality and even executions of suspects. Authorities deny this, saying police are fighting a war against well-armed gangs. Police killed more than 1000 people in the greater Rio area alone last year, more than in most countries.

On Friday, police shot dead four people described as bandits in the Monkeys Mountain slum. They killed one person on Friday in Rio's Vidigal slum. It was the third shootout there in a week.

Rio de Janeiro has unfortunately developed into one of the most dangerous places in regard to gang related crime, and police corruption in the last decade. Poverty is rife, resulting in heavily armed street gangs who shoot first and ask questions later.

Rio has gotten pretty bad. A friend of mine who was a MD in the Peace Corp, said he never felt in danger when he was in Africa, but during the 2 months he stayed in Rio (not for the peace corp) he actually used the word scared. Members of the party were robbed and beaten etc. Not all of Rio is that way mind you but parts of it are getting bad as you described.
