California Tops List of 10 States With Highest Taxes

This article shows how out of balance the income income tax structures are from State to State.

California has the highest at 13.3% and many states have no individual income tax at all.

What seems to be the reasons for this wide variance?

Is it corruption levels or is it that some states get money from other sources (corporate taxes for one) and spend less (or more efficiently) ?

The Tax Foundation has ranked the states by their state income tax rates and among the highest are California, Hawaii, and Oregon.

On a U.S. map, the Tax Foundation shows that the following 10 states (and counting the District of Columbia) have the highest individual income tax rates in 2014:

I blame prop 13 in 1978. They have to make up for the loss of property taxes. When property taxes stopped coming in at the same rate the cities lost a lot of revenue and had to ask the state for money, when they asked the state for money the state had to raise income taxes.

I would argue that Oregon, should be lower.

As there is no sales tax, so everything you purchase is automatically cheaper.


As an example, moving from CA to OR, was a huge savings tax wise, yet Income tax wise not so much.

And looking from the outside life seems to be pretty sweet in Cali. It aint switzerland or Austria, but life still seems to be pretty good in California. Now I wonder what the quality of life is in the states with the least taxation.

I'm about to move from Maryland to Pennsylvania in about 2 months. I just found another reason to do so. Yay!

On a bright note, you pay no taxes on food and clothes.. Fast food yes regular food no..

But they tax the hell out of you for other things.. Cigs and other crap..

Had no clue VT taxes were so high. What the hell are they paying for? It's as rural and empty as NH.

And Maine, WTF is that? 8%?

Somethings not right. Time to start checking politicians pockets.

Oh, I'm sure they make their taxes up in other ways (I don't smoke cigarettes so I don't have to worry about that), but taxes aren't the only reason I want to move out of Maryland. Maryland's desire to fine people to bankruptcy for every little thing that they do wrong is one of my driving motivators. Then they increase the fines all the time. Anyways, I'm about to go into rant mode so I'll stop there. Hopefully PA is a good change of scenery (and cheaper to live in which by all accounts that I've seen and researched appears to be true).

Holy crap! I just realized how lucky I am that we don't have a state income tax in Alaska! An extra 10% would really be killer for me. We don't have a sales tax either where I live (some towns have their own). I will say that my property tax to the city is a bit high though.

Why don't the governments of these states invest or become part owner(s) in the industries within their state, then invest that money?

Why tax the people when the state has resources that can be invested in?

Pa tax is I think 6.. But counties like Allegheny have taxes at like 7 or 8 because of those damn stadiums some idiot thought was a great idea..

But mostly you are right.. I am saying this cause I live south of Pgh in Fayette country.. so I get 6% tax here..

I don't pay property tax so I have no idea what it is.. But you can go on the Allegheny property tax site or something and figure that out.

I dont think they push taxes much because from what I understand all the Casinos here pull in more revenue than Vegas does.
