Is it uncanny how many people look exactly alike in this world?

Once in a celebrity lookalike contest on television I saw a guy looking EXACTLY like the celeb, only his head length was a little shorter. Another time, I was chilling with my friends in a club and I saw two girls who look very similar and I thought they were identical twins, asked them about it and they say they are just friends and are completely unrelated biologically.

It scares me somethings thinking there may be an exact carbon copy me somewhere in this world. I have ever heard there are 7 others who look exactly like you in this world. Being a basketball fan, I tried to look for some lookalikes of some basketball players/coaches and there were some interesting ones indeed...

Ex LA Lakers coach Phil Jackson and Colonel Sanders

Allen Iverson and Bobby Maze (College player)

Pau Gasol (Basketball player) and Lucas (Volleyball player)

I think it's simple genetics. There are only so many combinations to go around. Never saw anyone who looked like me but have seen several people who have my exact same nose. They were all related. DNA, normally the stuff I'm not allowed to talk about on ATS (along with astronomy.)

Your OP reminds me of a time when I visited a bar in a city I'd never been to. Long story short, I was escorted out by bouncers because I'd been barred the previous weekend even though I was a thousand miles away at the time. Someone I knew was held for a week as a murder suspect, truth be known, this guy was as gentle as a lamb. When he was finally released he showed me a picture of the suspect he was compared to. Even to me who'd known the guy a while I have to say, my visual mind said it was him. I wonder too if lots of us have duplicates somewhere on the globe.

When the S.O.A.D. video "Chop Suey" came out, I had one of my coworkers say to me " I didn't know you were in that video....". of course I hadn't been in the video but, I waited by my t.v. watching mtv for two days and sure enough there was my double. It blew my mind.

I agree that it is uncanny how you can see the same faces all over the world. I have traveled to over 25 countries as field service representative and have often seen doppelgänger a of friends and family.

I was on an oil rig in Cameroon and a security guard there had the same face as someone I grew up with. The funny thing is that the guard was African and my friend was Métis. Two different race but the same eyes, features and even mannerisms.

It guess when they say we all evolved from a limited number of bloodlines or genetics they are on to something.

I actually use my signature below cause i did meet "my self" or a guy who looked exactly like me, we met at a bar and both of us was like WTF, he then says "it's like meeting my self" and we both luaghed and became best friends for some years while having some fun with the look a like, but slowly we drifted apart and i have no idea where he is today.

The signature i found later and use it to remind me of that episode of my life and that i did like the look of "my self", the mind and spirit i still work on.

The world seems small when you experience stuff like that, would be nice to bump in to him again someday to see if we still look a like and cause he was pretty cool as a friend.

In 2nd grade we had an assignment to send a letter with our picture to a random 2nd grader in another city to try to become pen pals. I chose to send mine to Australia and received a letter back which had in it a picture in it of my very own doppelgänger... right down to the nearly identical glasses frame.

It is a small world.

On another note, I do wonder what percentage of our DNA actually defines our physical appearance and what the total of number of combinations would be. Could make for an interesting dissertation.

Well, i have a photocopy of me, or rather I'm a photocopy of another person because he is a year older

He is a US marine... And my cousin to.

We can pass as twin brothers and he's luso-american and I'm fully Portuguese lol.

In a family reunion we used t-shirts with our names on them, because his wife kept slapping my but thinking i was him lol

When I was about 20, living in a beach town in Australia, I used to get lots of people say hi to me that I didn't know, and quite a few people I would meet at parties and at work would swear they had met me before and would try "remind" me when we had met and what we had talked about.

They would even say things that I had apperently said that I could easily imagine myself saying, though had no recollection of ever having said.

It happened enough that I started to wonder if I had a split personality (lol) and didn't know it, but I could account for every second of my life... so that didn't make sense.

I eventually found out that there was another "me" living in the same town... with the same first name!

We looked almost identical, same height, did similar activities, both worked in petrol stations part time (competing stations, which is likely why it took so long to come across each other), were singers in bands and both played keyboard... and had similar personalities. Ironically, we were both the type of people that were highly individual.

We did meet once at a party, and funnily enough didn't really like each other... I think we were both offended that we tried so hard to be different, only to come across someone exactly the same... regardless of our efforts.

An interesting experience that deepened my understanding of individuality.

That's kind of creepy. Maybe you are long lost twin brothers or something? Haha! I remembered reading in a book of mysteries about two identical twins who were separated from young, but they have the same personalities, same walking manner, named their dog the same name and married a wife with the same name. Really very weird indeed.

In that book, there was another story of how there was twin girls who were never separated from young, their mother forced them to be with each other all the time and forbid them from having any friends. The end result is a telepathic connection between them, they spoke at the same time and will have the same actions. For example, if a twin raise their left hand the other twin will raise their right hand at the exact moment. Researchers had tried to create differences between them, for example, giving different colored shirts to them but that made them incredibly upset that they started to cry. They even voice out, speaking together, that they are the same exact person and they share the same mind....

Damm, if only I still have that book (I lost it) there were many other good interesting mysteries in it too. The book had the names of both these twins too.

i have never actually met my doppelganger(s). i do know at least one exists, possibly two that i know about. the first case i know about, not only do we look alike, but we also share the same first name, last name, even down to the first letter of our middle name. to go on top of that at the time our paths crossed, we also had the exact same signature, close enough that i and a couple others who looked at both together could not find any differences in them, and impossible to tell apart, maybe a handwriting annalist could, but not a lay person, including myself. which is why i changed my signature right afterwards. the only difference i know about is that he had to be at least 3 years older than myself (or lied on his job application, since the job he was doing required someone at least that much older than myself).

it all happened the first year i worked at a theme park as a young teenager. when you did your training you had to sign out the manual relating to your job, then you would have to turn it in or get charged for it. this was where i first ran into the fact that the other person existed. i went in to turn in the manual, but the sign out card was for the wrong manual, the signature was correct, it was my signature, but i also knew that i had checked the card before signing it, and that it should have been the correct card. so i asked them to recheck since the card was for the wrong manual, sure enough the correct card was right behind where the first one was. in the end at least 3 or 4 people ended up comparing the signatures, and non of us could tell them apart (slow day at the office, and it was interesting lol). when i went home i mentioned this to my mother. she wasn't all that surprised except for the signature. it seems that she had called the park to ask if she could drop my application off while she was out that way when i was in school. the person she talked to, just out of interest asked my name, and when she told him, he replied that he had my application in his hand. but then again when we needed to pick up prescriptions at the drug store we had to give our phone number since they had at least 7 people with the same name in their system, so it wasn't a huge thing to find another person with the same name. didn't really think much about it after that.

now all summer at work people kept coming up to me and asking why i had changed uniforms and jobs, since i had just been running a ride. i never thought to much about it other than to think they were pretty stupid or something, it just never clicked that maybe i should look into it. towards the end of the season i went to pick up my paycheck, it should have been pretty good since i had put in a lot of overtime. well i got a shock when i looked at it it was for about the right amount, provided you added another digit to it. so figuring they screwed up i went to payroll, where i was told it was not an error, but a uniform deduction and to talk to that department. when i went there i was informed that because i didn't turn in my uniform when i was fired, that they charged me for it. admittedly i threw a bit of a tantrum, stating i didn't turn it in because i needed to be wearing it for work in about half an hour. then i thought back about the other incident and told them to look me up in the file again. sure enough it was the next one in the file (morons). so that being dealt with i went on to work. after work i decided to go blow some steam riding rides. i don't know why i chose to ride a couple that i normally never bothered with, but i did. that was the second shock for the day at 2 of the rides (people worked in groups of 2 or 3 rides), i got called by name and "told" "what are you doing here, you know you can't be in the park after they fired you", and no amount of me saying it wasn't me would not stop it, that they were not morons and that anybody could tell it was me and besides i hadn't even bothered to try to change my voice. they even called bloody management on me. luckily the manager that came was actually MY manager who knew me well and to be honest they were rather confused by the whole thing since they knew me, knew my job, and couldn't figure out what those morons were going on about. must have been an interesting "incident report" lol. so i never did get to meet my doppelganger.

the second time i had a run in with a doppelganger (same one?? it was rather distant from the area of the first one), was years later, and where the first was just frustrating and amusing, this time was downright scary. i was walking to the variety store as per normal, when i saw "wanted posters" hanging everywhere. now wanted posters are rather unusual to see hanging, so of course i looked at one. i was shocked it was a rather good picture of ME. crime was rape, and it took place on the bike path just behind my backyard somewhere. needless to say i was a wee bit freaked out about it. i called a friend who told me i was probably just seeing myself when it didn't really look like me. well they called later and told me they had seen it on the news and it did look exactly like me. i was a nervous wreck for awhile. then one day in a week or two i was coming out of the variety store when i felt a hand clamp down on my shoulder and a voice say "we need to talk to you". i was pulled down a bit from the store and had "badges" flashed at me as a beginning of an interrogation, by two under cover cops. of course i kept denying everything since it wasn't me. i couldn't provide an alibi, why would i pay attention to where i was who i was with etc, not knowing i needed one? not to mention with the time it took place i would have been the only one awake, and at home. in the end a couple things saved my butt. the length of my hair is what finally stopped the interrogation. the cops leaving saying they had to check me out, since apparently anytime i left my house or went to the store they got tons of calls about me.

while i was still standing there shaking after the questioning, the owner of the variety store came out and took me into his stockroom and sat me down to calm me down. after i calmed down he filled me in on everything. first he apologized for not saying anything before, but he was told he couldn't by the cops. the victim was one of the girls who worked for him, someone who i knew from going there all the time. she was a really nice person, we always talked when she was there. but you know she proved her "niceness" in a surprising way. she knew that her assailant was not me, and even with everything she had been through, she apparently made a point of pointing me out on the store surveillance telling the cops it was not me. i still wonder how many of my old neighbors think it was me that did it, considering i was in the middle of moving when it all went down. sometimes a doppelganger adds things into your life you could do without.

Here in rural France the similarities between some people is crazy.

Inbreeding for all those years in small communities and their families still shows evidence today.

I won't talk about the mentality it also results in.

I notice this with my ex girlfriends...Ill often see a girl whos face is similar or whos body is or even their mannerisms or how they move. It is actually wild how many face types there are. There was an article posted here on ats maybe 2 years ago about something like this...that researchers have come up with like 60 face types or something...and everyone falls into the category. Ill try to dig it up.

Wow - these are interesting responses. I've never personally met a doppelganger of my own, but I did stumble across his picture years ago and saved it. I wish I could remember now where it was that I found the picture (on the internet somewhere, just don't remember where). My wife even says that, other than his longer shaggy hairstyle (but the same color), he looks exactly like me. Not just similar, but exact. It looks like a webcam picture, and he's sitting there with his shirt off - which just shows even more exact-ness with the same amount of chest hair, and even (I know this might be TMI) down to his "innie" nipples - exactly like mine. Same build, same big ol' Charlie Brown head and long nose, same mouth, etc.

It's really strange to see, but I wish I could find him and meet him and see if he's tall like me as well. It was really somewhat unsettling to stumble across.

Great thread OP!

For years now people have been telling me that there is a girl who looks exactly like me. She's suppose to be the same height as me, wear the same glasses.....everything. The only difference from what I've been told is that she is about 4 years older then me. We lived in the same city before I left for college, but I've never met her before, but I do know her name. Years ago there was a person that approached me thinking I was her.

Then when I went off to college, I found out there are two other girls that look exactly like me. I've never met them either and there is a chance that it could just be the same girl from my city that other people were seeing.

There are 7 billion people on the planet with only subtle differences between how they look, once you start adding in people who are no longer alive then it is no surprise that some of them look alike.
