How can you claim to be "awake" when using terms like "Obama-phone"? The program was established by President GW Bush. Most welfare programs were established by conservatives. Sure, there is misuse by people, and the government has a tendency to screw things up, but the safety net is essential to survival. Besides, where do you drawn the line on what a poor person is allowed to get with their EBT card? I've heard people say things like they shouldn't be allowed to get anything but bare essentials like bread, milk, cheese, rice, etc... No meat. No sweets. No luxuries of any kind. Where has our compassion gone? Why have we become so greedy and selfish that we want the best for ourselves, but not for other people? Just because someone is down and out doesn't mean they must live like they are poor. And as for this idea of people going to Wal-Mart and buying food with an EBT card whilst buying a TV with cash - where do you get such things? Both government and independent studies have demonstrated that the percentage of misuse of the food stamp program is approximately 8%, less than one in ten. And before you have a chance to say it, NO, I'm not a "leftist."

I am ALL for getting rid of the welfare state, but does that include corporate welfare? Why should we have to pay out subsidies to oil companies? Why should we, the taxpayers have to bail out "too big to fail" banks? Why should companies recieve taxpayer funded grants, some of the same companies which then send jobs out of the country? The money we spend on public assistance is DWARFED by these things, yet I never hear a whimper out of the right wing regarding these issues. Please explain to me WHY.

Imagine that and Thomas Jefferson was a liberal and hardcore 2nd amendment guy. What does that make of leftist today?? Socialist, communist, big government authoritarian?

George Bush was a moderate. Moderates and leftist are big government and nearly identical. This is what happens when Democrats constantly switch sides when they find it beneficial. The only real difference is the far right compared to the rest.

That's the whole point overwhelm the system to enslave us into more debt for the central bankers.

Take away poor people's assistance and your society will end up with millions starving and homeless

You think they care about that? No republicans don't give a damn about human life except for when it's a voting issue.

How can you claim to be so sure of yourself, the obama-phone was actually a program started after President Reagan broke up AT&T and Ma Bell if I remember correctly.
Let me do what you should have and investigate instead of using a Huff or NPR reply.

The idea of providing low-income individuals with subsidized phone service was originated in the Reagan administration following the break-up of AT&T in 1984. (It was expanded and formalized by the Telecommunications Act of 1996.) The program is paid for by telecommunications companies through an independent non-profit, not through tax revenue.

The Truth
I would go ahead a debunk more of your post, but my husband is getting ready to call me from Kiev, he's helping an Old Friend. I don't have time right now.
But thanks for showing me that people still don't Investigate before they post.

Now why oh why would Republicans want to starve out all those low wage workers ?

That is why republicans do not want birth control and abortion legal, accessible, or affordable. Keep pumping out their slave pool every 18 months.

1. a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs

Are you seriously suggesting those old parasites contributed even one dime towards their social security and medical care? You are delusional.

You sir/mam, are the one who is delusional. Not only am I suggesting that those old parasites did indeed contribute, I still have the check stubs to prove it!

Not only have they already spent all the money that should have been saved for their retirement, but they also expect us to pay back the trillions in debt they ran up over the last few decades.

Who exactly do you mean by "they?" I've been retired for over 9yrs. and I have yet to draw one dime of Social Security or Medicare benefits.

We'll talk more when you're a little older, wiser and hopefully, less inspired by misguided hatred.

I have to agree with Flatfish and his / her reply to you.
That is something I don't do Often if Ever, Agree with Flatfish, But there's a First Time For Every thing, Even Hell Freezing Over at Some Point.

My husband as been retired for over 15 years as a F L E O and yes his retirement check is slightly sublimated by S S he has not bothered to draw full S S.
Plus he works thirty hours a week to stay busy and pay's back into S S and Medicare and all the taxes a much younger persons working would pay.

Yes, because he continues to pay into S S.
Maybe you should learn more about your older generation before you go mouthing off about us.

But somehow the welfare pushed by the right, which is even more expensive than the welfare you're referring to, is okay? I am talking about corporate welfare and the marriage between government and big business. It is no secret why the right wants no government regulation when it comes to private enterprise...Anyway, these same republicans who clamor about the left and welfare for the citizenry are the same people who give our tax dollars to the people who need it even less. Need I remind everyone what occurred with the bank bailouts, and who orchestrated it? The truth is that this type of corporate welfare, which is more often than not invented and pushed by the right, costs the citizens more than the welfare system for individuals with no corporate ties.

Wasting your breath Jiggy. This here is a right wing site and that will fall on deaf ears. Giving money to the rich is OK, they are the "JOB CREATORS", never mind the fact that since Jr's tax cuts we should have a job surplus, but, curiously we don't, even though the Republicans controlled everything from 2000-2006 (Those darned Democrats)

But seriously, threads like these are refreshing as they remind me of just how ridiculous this site is, which is why I love it. Throw up a "Deny Ignorance" slogan, it makes people feel smart enough they don't have to read entire reports, or research at all. Just believe what they read when it agrees with them ( But no,no,no, the media lies ALL the time, I still don't get that LOL) Anyway, just take this site with a grain of salt and be thankful these are a people who are an extreme minority in this country

A lot of you lefties are going to attack me for this thread, but that's okay. I understand it's a tough pill to swallow. The stats come from the end of the 2011 census. You can only multiply these numbers as the welfare receiving population continues to grow exponentially.

Not on the left or right but you are barking up the wrong tree if you think the common Upper, Lower or Middle Class American has anything to do with what the elite have going on in this country.

Your source also says:

There is, in fact, a government program that will provide low-income people with a free or low cost cell phone. It was started in 2008 under George W. Bush.

So the idea originated under Reagan and was established under Bush. They were both republicans so either way dovdov's point is correct.

So of all the things we have wrong in this country, welfare will be it's downfall?

Welfare is a drop in the bucket compared to the money spent on wars, corporate subsidies and the protection of the corporate state.

Why is it considered "free-market principles" to allow a big business to pay no taxes, yet if an individual that cannot find a job, or at least a well-paying job, get's a little help....they are the downfall of society.

It's quite obvious that our overall mindset is way off and we need to get back to basics of what is right, just and moral.

Our Government has bent over backwards to serve Large Corporations and Banks in this country to the detriment of small and medium sized business and the majority of its citizens.

We hear the talk constantly of needing to lower taxes, get rid of regulations and do even more to keep them from moving to China or some other third world Hell Hole.

What changed them from moving in the past?

These third world Hell Holes with no regulations and potential cheap labor existed in the past as well.

What changed was government creating trade policies to cater to corporate and banking lobbyists interests in other countries regardless of other countries political system. Indirectly Supporting Communism, Fascism and Crony Capitalism is A OK if there are profits to be made.

But that is not enough. They want and demand more because money and profits, not the best interests of the nation is their sole obligation regardless of the harm done to this country. Any objection to their wishes is met with trampling on their freedoms to do business with whoever they want.

Does that mean it is ok if I want to do arms business with Afghans or Iraqi's fighting US troops?
If you say no, You are trampling on my freedoms to do business with who I want to and I am not supposed to care what harm that does to my fellow American's. I am supposed to be only concerned about profits.

It's very hard to give you direct numbers because there would be an inevitable debate on what qualifies as welfare and what qualifies as a subsidy.

A rough guess I would make, just based on the initial numbers I have seen, is that "welfare" accounts for anywhere form 50-400 billion a year....depending on what programs we add. We spend over 800 billion alone on defense. Add to that the billions we give out in tax-exemptions, tax-breaks and subsidies, it become very hard to defend one while demonizing the other.

Hell, I believe we spend about 150 billion + a year just on corn subsidies.

Bottom Line is that the corporate and banking elite run the system and any welfare passed out goes right back into their pockets. Subsidies Indeed.

There are some that say the difference between poor people and rich people is that the rich hold and invest their money and the poor spend it. It ends right back in the rich pockets anyways.
