Whether or not this new law has anything to do with the decline or not, it's probably too early to tell.

As for the conjecture being BS? Your opinion. One I do not share.

Sorry if that embarrass' you. To be quite honest, you must embarrass easily.

Murder is down all over, that's a good thing. Might that not have something to do with the large increase in gun sales nationwide over the past decade or so? Just conjecture on my part... Would be criminals are having second thoughts about mugging someone? Or breaking into the little old lady's house? Both for the simple reason that they might be armed and dangerous?

My own experience tells me precisely that...

Not too many years ago, I was sitting in den of my old house, which I no longer have, when a gentleman walked up to my door with a sledgehammer. Intending, no doubt, to help himself to some of my treasures. I got his attention through the window, and showed him the revolver I keep in my desk. Didn't aim it at him, just put it on the desk where he could plainly see it.

Oddly enough? He left. So please don't attempt to tell me that having a weapon, and a perceived willingness to use it, doesn't deter crime.

No one got hurt. No one died. Quite simply because I had a firearm. Would I have actually shot him? God alone knows, 'cause I surely don't. I won't until, God forbid, that time actually comes that I have to pull that trigger. As I said, God forbid that time ever come.

You and I are going to have to agree to disagree on this issue, I fear. Which is fine.

I agree. Violent crime has been trending downward in the US since the early to mid 90's. The number of shall issue CCW states has, also, steadily climbed during that time as well. In fact, the beginning of the CCW movement correlates pretty closely with the beginning of that decline. It's only a correlation, not a proven cause and effect. Telling all the same.

It no fun if everyone has a gun. Higher chance of being on the other side of a barrel.

I find it rather amusing that some people are dismissing the article.

If the rates for 'gun' deaths was on the rise they would be piling on how guns go around hurting people.

And blaming CCW.

Passed back in July which is about a year ago.

And for the record winter only lasts for 3 to 4 months out of the ENTIRE year.

It's a step in the right direction some may say not knocking the good benefits - but it's going in the WRONG direction.

It would be much better if they did away with CCW and allowed folks to carry any gun openly or concealed per the persons choice with no registration what so ever. I mean to say all forms of CCW should be Illegal !!!

I support Open Carry on handguns in my state that I don't have to register at all. I own and carry these proudly. I am strictly opposed to CCW's having to have a permit on a licensed and registered gun.

I really am opposed to CCW itself in all forms. Thugs won't register their gun yet they will conceal it. If all guns were legal to open carry everywhere without license and registration more folks would do it and it would be easier to keep tabs on who's a thug and who's not. If a thug gets caught with a concealed gun, lock him up. All guns should be highly visible in all public places for everyone's safety and the thugs will think twice before committing crimes.

Show me a guy who carries a CCW and I'll show you a coward. - Some may not like this but ask yourself - why Must you conceal the weapon - there is No good reason to no matter how you look at it. Show me a city where no one carries guns openly and I'll show you a city where thugs have no reason not to rob people and those citizens have no recourse to fight back. Show me a city where no one is allowed to carry a concealed weapon and everyone is carrying openly and i'll show you a city with the lowest crime rates around.

This decline Chicago is seeing is Only a fad because the media has hyped the fact that now Chicago is not left so defenseless - What is going to happen is thugs will forget this and start thugging again once this sensationalism wears off because they will see that these folks with CCW's are not as effective a deterrent as lots of folks openly carrying. Just like in Every Other State.

On July 9, 2013, Illinois enacted the Firearm Concealed Carry Act.
The first three months of 2014 saw 6 fewer murders than the same time frame in 2013 –a 9 percent drop– and 55 fewer murders than 2012, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

Chicago's murder rate dropped much before the Concealed Carry law was enacted and not much afterward.

mugger
The first concealed carry permits were issued in late February, so the decrease in crime can’t yet be attributed to more people carrying guns. I'm sure in time, we will have a better record of how this pans out.

Well, not exactly. The main point that anti-2nd people never get is this:

Criminals are not deterred by people defending themselves with guns nearly as much as they are by knowing that anyone around them may be armed.

Therefore, as soon as a CC law is passed, the criminals know they're on notice, and crime drops virtually overnight.

What's your point? Permits were not available until January.

As far as the law having any effect on the crime rate for the first quarter of this year. Not so much. The first set of permits (5,000 of them...statewide) were not mailed until the beginning of March.

Yes, the article is pretty silly.

Well, the law was passed last July. Did the crime rate drop overnight?

The first permits went out in early March. Murders for March 17th to 23rd were up 75% over 2013. Interesting.

You are correct and not to mention that Cities like Chicago have some statistical tricks up there sleeves to appease the politicians and citizens as well. Right now the State Police have an overwhelming backlog for CC applications. There are not even enough training facilities who are in compliance with the state yet to help pick up the slack for the training program. The ones that do meet the requirements are seeing a major revenue increase and a lot more business coming there way. More facilities are popping up to fill the gap. It's a great time for small business in that area. The next 5 years will most likely show a dramatic drop in gun related crime.

More stats: "Aggravated: Handgun"

Since no one in Chicago had a permit until March, for January and February:
2011: 429
2012: 410
2013: 448
2014: 279

Seems like the weather did have more to do with it than permits. I think we need more data to decide if CC permits really make a difference.

Oh, and to make sure it wasn't just because the law passed (July last year) and people started being more cautious even though there were no permits. Here's January - June:
2011: 2,053
2012: 2,076
2013: 1,704

I dont mean to argue, member above stated that US or he need to educate rest of the World about guns.I'm in Europe (part of the rest of the World) and we dont need guns and we are doing fine.

Yeah, Extremist immigrants are running around like lunatics hacking your soldiers to death in broad daylight, he wasn't even allowed to be armed. The doors are left wide open for anyone to come on in and suck off of your Socialistic system that has bankrupted your Countries. You're a subjugated people who will do as you are told.

Excellent news! No surprise at all, either. The shootings being down ought to send a very large hint to the anti0gun crowd, but I won't hold my breath on that one! S&F, for the good news.

I have heard otherwise. How about all those people in Great Britain, that are attacked by Muslims, and can't defend themselves? The same thing happens other places as well.

Seems to me, things are far from "fine" there.

But, the decrease occurred before anybody had a permit. Is the hint that something else was responsible?

I think you'll find it's the Muslims who walk the streets of Britain scared of being attacked.

Really weird you'd choose corrupt countries with bad governments, civil wars and poverty.

Kidding. It's not weird at all.

Here's the numbers for countries in Europe. Places with gun bans for the general population. (Farmers/hunters/special police excluded
Of course they all require serious background check. But you're probably against regulation as well..)

Some countries listed below have gun laws open for the general population.

Europe -

Belarus 4.9 (0.1 specifically for guns www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/belarus0
Bulgaria 2.0
Czech Republic 1.7
Hungary 1.3
Poland 1.1
Republic of Moldova 1.0
Romania 2.0
Russian Federation 10.2 (Allows guns to 18+)
Slovakia 1.5
Ukraine 5.2

Denmark 0.9
Estonia 2.5
Finland 2.2
Greenland 19.2 (Wow! Except we see these numbers are out of 100,000 and Greenland has only 56,000 people. 11 deaths in '09 gives us 19.2.)
Iceland 0.3
Ireland 1.2
Latvia 3.1
Lithuania 6.6
Norway 0.6
UK & NI 1.2 (0.23 for guns specifically www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/united-kingdom)

Albania 4.4 (Guns aren't being regulated properly )
Bosnia & Herzegovina 1.5
Croatia 1.4
Greece 1.5
Italy 0.9
Malta 1.0
Montenegro 3.5
Portugal 1.2
Serbia 1.2
Slovenia 0.7
Spain 0.8
Macedonia 1.9

Austria 0.6
Belgium 1.7
France 1.1
Germany 0.8
Liechtenstein 2.8
Luxembourg 2.5
Monaco 0.0 (as of 2009)
Netherlands 1.1
Switzerland 0.7 - LOOK! SWITZERLAND! IT'S ON THE LIST! At 0.7! With strict gun regulation! Did you even read the report you're source is sourcing from? Or did you just copy paste?

Australia 1.0
New Zealand 0.9

China 1.0
Taiwan 3.2
Japan 0.4

I've used the source you did. I just didn't ignore the stable countries.
These numbers relate to "Intentional homicide, count and rate per 100,00 population (1995 - 2011).

I'm sure if you give me time I can find exact gun rates for the UK.

"I've heard otherwise" Well by golly that does it then! We don't need to look at any evidence or situations where people are attacked by non-muslims. By weapons that aren't guns or suicide or accidental death.

Just blame the Muslims!

/sarcasm.
