No, I don't think you have it quite right. It's not about a culture of peace, per se. A culture where you have an absolute despot ruling absolutely with an iron fist can be a "peaceful" place but certainly not one anyone actually wants to live in (unless you're the despot at the top).

What we need is to go back teaching basic respect for one another.

That's what I included in the post.

we could cultivate a culture where peace, love, and respect for each other

But if the solution it is only a platitude and does not include real hard choices then what good is it?

nobody ever said gun control causes gun violence rates to go up, merely that it doesn't decrease violent crime rates. the only reason it's so low in western europe is less crimes in general, lack of availability and the general level of development and prosperity of their cities and towns. in most parts of southern states it's genuine third world nation living, corrupt everything, poor or no education, starvation, lack of sanitation, civil strife, etc. hell some parts are 4th world and some of the rest live as they did before the civil war, cut off from the outside, attacking anything that gets close.

the south is mostly wild or plain undeveloped where there are people, the middle class and such live within certain restricted places and the people there never know the other side of things. go ahead apply large city based laws to places outside of the cities and see how well that goes, well if you want chaos, riots, destruction and violent revolt that is. most don't care about destroying stuff because it might get some places fixed up and repaired for free, got not much to lose when you're poor as dirt.

oh and the biggest issue in the south, why we despise the idea of gun control more than anything is the fear that richer, more populated states will run out of control and dictate how we do everything, robbing us of a voice, repeating the situation prior to the civil war.
yea i said it, we fear the north and still bear a grudge for what happened over 150 years ago and many wish for an excuse to get revenge, to pay them back for dooming us to poverty and exploitation.
i think any attempt on our most precious right to protect our lives will be a disaster in the south and it will cause war for real, debate stats all you want but the facts are pointless when you're talking about taking away something people find great importance in.

the south is hardened by war and poverty and still knows itself, still can kill if pushed so be careful what you gun control supporters ask for, because if you do get your way, it won't end with just words and petty bickering like you're used to.

In order to truly compare America and any European nation, we'd first have to remove all constitutional rights, THEN compare.

Not entirely true, in the UK we have the Magna Carta which the united states constitution was based on.

Point taken.

So many gun control threads.

So many repeated posts about ignoring freedom, denying freedom, reducing freedom all for the false sense of security and safety.

The election debates are starting.

Strength is in the masses !!!

Why does it need to have sacrifices?

We had such a culture in the past when things were much more brutal in terms of the immediacy of death. We also had more freedom and personal liberty.

So why would we need to sacrifice some of our personal liberties in order to regain that?

Guns are evil !

Only the government, and the police get to have them.

The criminals don't give a ratts behind either way.

And there we all are caught between a 'rock' and a hard case.

I attrtibute that to more to:

The breakdown of the family unit, and replacing it with 'mother' and 'father' government.

And turning away from religion.

As all those decline.

The things we see happening in the 'news' have been on the rise.

Other opinions will vary though.

I keep seeing people wanting to talk about "gun deaths", as if that statistic means anything on its own. Murder rate is the statistic that they are implying when they say "gun deaths". That is the imagery that they are trying to use.

Gun death is just another way to die. A way to die that is far, far, far less prevalent than 100 other ways to die.

It is dishonest. When you see the term "gun violence", be rest assured that you have a tool that is trying to pull a switcheroo on you. They want you to see "gun violence" and think "murder rate".

Otherwise, what on Gods green earth would they be telling us that a nation where guns are legal have more shootings than nations where they are illegal. It is a self evident statement used to create a dishonest conversation.

I grew up seeing guns everywhere, trucks, the corner of house, the barn, the chicken coop, no one thought about gun control in the 50's, 60's, 70's. Most people, even children, seem to understand the gun's place. The old timers I knew, just automatically removed their hats, wiped their boots off, and did not take guns into places, where there were women and children. A certain amount of respect for the weapon has been lost or not taught, only fear of it.

In the last 10 minutes I have found 8 different rankings on how lenient gun laws are per state, none of them matched each other or your rankings, I cant put much stock in something that varies this widely. The term "gun violence" includes any crime where a gun was present, it doesn't mean the gun was fired. Why not look at gun laws versus violent crimes per state instead,

Here are the Top 10 states with the most -- and least -- violent crime per capita, according to the FBI's data:

Highest Crime Per Capita

Washington, D.C.: 1,243.7 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants
Tennessee: 643.6
Nevada: 607.6
Alaska: 603.2
New Mexico: 559.1
South Carolina: 558.8
Delaware: 547.4
Louisiana: 496.9
Florida: 487.1
Maryland: 476.8
In case you were wondering, California (423.1), New York (406.8) and Texas (408.6) didn't trail too far behind.

Lowest Crime Per Capita

Maine: 122.7
Vermont: 142.6
New Hampshire: 187.9
Virginia: 190.1
Wyoming: 201.4
Utah: 205.8
Idaho: 207.9
Kentucky: 222.6
Minnesota: 230.9
Hawaii: 239.2

Source

Or even focus on murder rates / capita, since death appears to be what your focusing on.

In 2012

Your list of states with the most relaxed gun laws

state - murders/100,000 people - ranking (1 = most murders/capita)

South Dakota - 3.0 - 34th
Arizona - 5.5 - 15th
Mississippi - 7.4 - 2nd
Vermont - 1.3 - 49th
Louisiana - 10.8 - 1st
Montana - 2.7 - 39th
Wyoming - 2.4 - 40th
Kentucky - 4.5 - 21st
Kansas - 2.9 - 37th
Oklahoma - 5.7 - 13th

Average - 4.6 - 25th

Your list of states with the strictest gun laws

California - 5.0 - 18th
New Jersey - 4.4 - 23rd
Massachusetts - 1.8 - 44th
Connecticut - 4.1 - 27th
Hawaii - 2.1 - 42nd
New York - 3.5 - 31st
Maryland - 6.3 - 7th
Illinois - 5.8 - 12th
Rhode Island - 3.2 - 32nd
Michigan - 7.0 - 4th

Average - 4.3 - 24th

I fail to see any difference here, perhaps you could enlighten me as to the difference between being killed with a gun, and being killed by some other means

People are foaming at the mouth scared to death that Obama is going to ban guns and come door to door somehow and seize them. We read the hysteria daily here on ATS and elsewhere online. Well the truth is Obama is the complete opposite and if you actually take time to look at his record the only 2 laws he signed that dealt with guns actually benefit gun owners.

I think that the NRA and the gun rights groups would total more than 10% of the population if they actually paid attention to what is happening and what has happened in the government.

QUOTE FROM SOURCE: Source
Gun Laws Signed By Obama

During his first term Obama didn't call for any major new restriction on guns or gun owners. Instead he urged authorities to enforce the state and federal laws already on the books.

In fact, Obama signed only two major laws that address how guns are carried in America, and both actually expand the rights of gun owners.

One of the laws allows gun owners to carry weapons in national parks; that law took effect in February 2012 and replaced President Ronald Reagan's policy of required guns be locked in glove compartments of trunks of car that enter national parks.

Another gun law signed by Obama allows Amtrak passengers to carry guns in checked baggage, a move that reversed a measure put in place after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Obama often mentions the expansion of gun rights under those two laws. He wrote in 2011:

"In this country, we have a strong tradition of gun ownership that's handed from generation to generation. Hunting and shooting are part of our national heritage. And, in fact, my administration has not curtailed the rights of gun owners - it has expanded them, including allowing people to carry their guns in national parks and wildlife refuges."

Obama has repeatedly express support for the Second Amendment. "If you’ve got a rifle, you’ve got a shotgun, you’ve got a gun in your house, I’m not taking it away. Alright?" Obama has said.

Correct.

He did this because it makes it easier to; .....

A Federal law would be easily challenged in court.

And, it's easier for the Feds to challenge unfavorable (to them) State and local laws in Federal Courts.

One advantage is the Feds can selectively enforce federal laws too.

The demographics are totally different. The few large cities there are, somehow most people in those cities seem to believe there are no guns in canada. Most of canada is more akin to rural areas of the US, which has little to no crime too. The three biggest differences between living in rural NY, and living here in rural NB. People speak french, there is an ocean right down the road, less of a hassle to buy a gun.

Oops, I didn't notice what forum this was in.......
