When ever there is a swarm in one area a big quake seems to hit in another area, to bad there isn't a way to predict where.

Oh I'm sure we could if we truly understood the interior of the earth. Just the other week the dailymail was reporting the Sumerian Apsu story was confirmed with a new understanding of the earth interior.

Best wishes for all impacted by this latest earthquake.

5 Aftershocks reported on USGS all around the initial 8.2 by chile.

Alaska was also just hit by a 3.1 in Cantwell.

Something bigger to come?

Seconds after I post this a 6th quake has hit Iquique, Chile. At 5.2

Was just about to post that video, that looks d*mn scary.

Been trying to grab a CNN livestream of the net, so much they are only showing the weather on edition.cnn.com...

If anybody has a CNN livestream, BBC, or anything pls post it.

I hope people are safe.

I was about to go sleep when I knew about it. I have many, many friends in that area. Now I just want to know if all them are safe. Frustrating.

I do to. If you hear anything what so ever, please U2U me. If I hear anything, I'll message you as well. I can't get through on the phone 😓

Thank you. Will do. Yeah, it's pointless to try to get them by phone now.

It's been upgraded to a 8.2, but nearly twice as deep as previously reported:

(CNN) -- An 8.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northern Chile on Tuesday, generating a tsunami, authorities said. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake, which hit at at 6:46 p.m. local time, was centered some 60 miles northwest of Iquique at a depth of 12.5 miles. It had previously put the magnitude at 8.0 and the depth at 6.2 miles.

Dang. Yahoo news says the 6.5 foot waves are a precursor to the actual tsunami.

IF there are further tsunamis, they can keep hitting for the next 2 hours is my understanding of these things.

In Tacna (Peru) :

- Authorities asking to text, no call.
- The walls of the Unanue Hospital cracked, moving out patients.
- All school clases suspended, evaluating if buildings are safe.

The servers are pretty swamped over at earthquake-report.com, but I finally got on. (they have a track record of excellent coverage with many 'on the ground' reports)

03:51 Reports of collapsed houses in Arica
03:52 -Control tower of airport in Iquique is damaged
03:52 -Reports of looting
03:53 -Minor injuries and one seriously injured (a big TV felled on a kid)
03:53 No power in ALL Iquique
03:56 -Pichilemu has 85% of it’s people evacuated, Bucalemu y Paredones 100% of them and Navidad 75%
03:56 -Collapsed houses in Huara
03:56 -Damaged houses in Moquegua, Peru
03:58 -Juan Fernandez island is completely evacuated

Next 6 hours for the Tsunami alert

It looks like the Tsunami was a wolf cry. Just some slightly higher beach waves, nothing like what we saw in Sumatra.

The population exposed to the worst shaking (and potential tsunami) is fairly large. Almost 700,000 people in the area according to USGS

VI Arica 186k
VI Iquique 227k
V Tacna 280k

(weird--the rest of the communities don't show up in my list, but they are at the link
)

Would you want to take that chance? The gov throwing out the tsunami alert seems like the responsible thing to do even if they are erring on the side of caution.

We don't exactly know until it's too late.

That may be a bit premature. The 1st wave isn't always the largest, and it can be up to 1 hour between tsunami waves.

According to the latest Bulletin, the 1st predicted wave hasn't even arrived at the town of Pimental, Peru on the warned list.

Im sure it did. But then again I could probably find a cave painting with a rock with some shake lines around it and claim that it was predicting this because it's just vague enough to work and people will eat it up with a spoon and thank me for it.

Anderson Cooper on CNN is reporting that 300 inmates escaped from a women's prison in Iquique, Chile. 16 have been recaptured.

Also a minor landslide, but no major damage or deaths--that's wonderful.

ETA:
From earthquake-report.com :

Update : Damaged boats in Iquique due to tsunami. The mayor of Iquique has just confirmed a second fatality. He also told that 3 people have been seriously injured.
Update : 1 person has been killed by a heart attack in AltoHospicio – no direct earthquake fatalities so far

Bummer...it is early still.
