I got the no-apocalypse blues!

I was talking about how the people born recently won't ever know what it's like to have the looming threat of 2012 approaching. Whether you believed in it or not, it definitely was a part of our culture. Lots of people made jokes, lot of people laughed nervously but wondered in the back of their mind if it was something to worry about. A few people took it seriously and prepped.

Well a friend responded with "don't forget Y2K. We lived through at least 2 end-of-the-world dates". Which reminded me of 5-5-2000, when the Earth was supposed to tilt on its axis. And I was like "Damn, now that I think about it, doomsday dates were a major part of our generation! No wonder I got the no-apocalypse blues!" Lol.

Don't let the lack of apocalypses get you down.......after all, there SUPERVOLCANOS!

You know...I'm not afraid to admit that I was concerned about 2012. On Dec. 21, 2012 at 11:11 am....I sat and held my breath for the entire minute, lol.
Yes, I did buy into all the hype...but I also had a horrible feeling of dread that was building as the year progressed. I just 'felt' that something terrible was going to happen.
Y2K wasn't quite the same, because basically everyone just seemed to think the computers might be affected. No one was talking 'end of world', at least not that I was aware of.

Why worry? Because it has happened before. Apparently everything gets pretty much wiped out, and then begins again. (at least that's how I see it). I do still believe that one day something will happen that kills off most life on earth. I'm just not waiting for it now.
Social media allows us to know what is going on everywhere, all the time. Before we didn't think about these things because mostly we were unaware. (ignorance was bliss, haha)

Anyways, cool thread! S&F and I hope the trolls stay under the bridge!

Be like me, hold your breath, while clicking on that all caps link telling me of of my potential demise....get that initial rush of *is this it?*.

Then realize it's just another heads up from the galactic federation that will fizzle out as usual. Or, another just spotted comet where someone read the math wrong....

If we wait patiently, California will hiccup, and we can feed off that for a few days. It's what I love about ATS....the doom porn buffet is open 24.7.

I'll admit though. Y2K was a year long feast...

I spent my childhood convinced that few sandbags and a formica table was protection from a nuclear bomb, and an old empty biscuit tin over a radio would guarantee communication with the outside world . We were convinced we'd be nuked, it was strangely a carefree time

Yeah, I mean there's always some kind of possible threat to people that have to be on guard against. It feels different though. The end of the world, or something catastrophic enough to effect the entire planet... well, that's something that brings people together in a strange sense. Sure, we unite by fear, which isn't the healthiest of circumstances. But still, it was something common that we all shared to a degree. Nobody I know ever talks about a supervolcano.

I'm not sure if I can properly explain what I'm thinking, but I'll try. There is something about a global threat that brings people together. It's like a reality check. The masses are so often pre-occupied with their illusions of what's important; my cel-phone is better than yours, so-and-so celebrity is having a baby, etc. But who cares about any of that when the planet is about to explode, you know? Even though people react differently, and have different opinions as to the validity of an E.L.E, it still brings people together in a very sobering way. Does that make sense?

On the other hand, I wonder about the psychological ramifications of repeatedly being threatened with a multitude of doomsday scenarios steadily throughout one's life.

Ask someone who is religious.

Fear not, the new ones on earth have this to look forward to:

2020: Asteroid will anniliate earth
2024: another asteroid (this one 4 rielz)
2030: The antichrist will definitely be the potus
2033: Polar shifting
2040: Machines will definitely take over humanity in a violent uprising
2044: Black hole singularity will cross our solar system (as evidence of not seeing one...you cant see em!)
2050: Government zombies will activate via nanochips in brains implanted by your augmentation visors
2052: AI will shut down the world, leading us into perpetual darkness and enslavement (like 2040, but no obvious terminators)
2060: uploaded people will kill off the biological people.
2070: The people thawed out from cryonic suspension will be found to have no souls, will open a gateway from hell
2080: PlayStation will go out of business
3000: God will reset the simulation and start a new game.

All of these will definitely 100% probably happen maybe.
Point is, there will always be some arbitrary number for doom. DOOOOM!!!

Just remember its when its all quiet and calm that the calamity hits. right when no one expects it.
also, the longer we go with out the end of the world they closer we get to it.

just think of all those movies were everyone is happy and having fun then BAM death and distruction.

so just relax and enjoy yourself the end is always near.

I think ishum is on to something. Consider the following when formulating the end-time indicators...

I now know the recipe to turn someone into a dragon. That would shake things up a bit. I will need a wad of money and a few volunteers. That would shake things up a bit. we are sorry for averting doomsday again and again. It just seemed right at the time.

Trib is supposed to start sometime in the next 18 months. That gives all the new kids about 7 years to become aware that it's all coming to an end.

"Now is the end"..............".the world we know will die"....in 5..4..3..2..1..??...............oh well, same time tomorrow people...?
