A attacker broke into a school dormitory and stabbed eight teenagers to death, and wounded four others. The attacker then fled the scene and has not been apprehended as of yet. The attack occurred around midnight in the boys dormitory of High School No. 2 in Ruzhou city, central Henan province. This is the latest in a series of violence directed at children that has plagued China.

UPDATE: 11/27/04 A mother has turned in her son following the stabbing deaths at a high school in China.

BEIJING - The mother of a 21-year-old man accused of slashing as many as nine boys to death as they slept in their high school dormitory turned her son in after he attempted to commit suicide, a news report said.

Yan Yanming, 21, was reported to police after he attempted to take his life late Thursday in the city of Ruzhou, the Xinhua News Agency said on Saturday. The agency said Yan confessed and said he slashed the students out of hatred.

Xinhua put the death toll in the attack at eight, but another state-run news agency, the China News Service, said nine students were killed.

BEIJING, (AFP) - A mystery attacker stabbed eight teenagers to death as they slept and injured four others after breaking into a school dormitory morning, in the latest grizzly attack on children in China.

The murders took place at High School No. 2 in Ruzhou city, central Henan province, teachers and local authorities said.

"It happened in the boys dormitory. It happened around midnight," a teacher at the school, who did not want to be named, told AFP.

"All the dead are high school level children," she said.

China News Service (CNS) said that among the four injured, two were in serious condition.

Local police and the Public Security Bureau have begun investigations, although no motive was immediately apparent.

"The police are here at the school at the moment," said the teacher, before phone lines were cut.

The violence is staggering. (From the same article)

Last month, a five-year-old boy and his teacher were killed at a Beijing kindergarten by a man trying to steal. The boy's body was found stuffed in a washing machine. In September, a man with a knife and homemade bombs attacked 28 children in a kindergarten in east China's Suzhou city. No one was killed. That same month, a knife-wielding man stabbed 25 children and kidnaped a nine-year-old girl at a primary school in eastern Shandong province. He was executed this week. Meanwhile, in August a mentally ill caretaker killed one child and injured 17 others in a knife attack at a Beijing kindergarten.

This is Columbine level of violence that appears to be occurring regularly there. The government has increased security at schools, but the attacks seem to keep happening. I wonder if it has to do with population density, or the absolute poverty that seems to be the norm over most of the country. You really have to wonder about violence directed at children.

Well, one thing is for sure...they don't allow their guilty to languish in prison waiting for appeals.

I think the older generation uneducated or under privileged generation must be feeling angry that the kids have a much better in store for them than they had.
I think it is a mixture of high debt=>economic failure => poverty => jealousy =>anger.
In their delirium over their failures they must have just gone POSTAL !
Push a man to the wall and he'll knock you over!
