My Dear good friend...the late Ricky Lawson:



This was at the Red White and Blue Club, here in Old Town Pasadena, which is now closed. It was Ricky's favorite spot.


He received a Grammy with the Yellow Jackets, which he gave his Grammy necklace to me. Ricky, also toured with my brother Jon Myron Clark on Michael Jackson's "Bad Tour" and on the "Dangerous" tour among hundreds of others. Ricky Lawson is definitely one of the greats! Awesome Lawson is what we all called Ricky 😢

Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett, another Michael Jackson drummer, who some swear is better than Ricky...he is pretty awesome.





Jonathan Moffett is now obviously, touring with the Michael Jackson "Immortal Tour" along with my brother rhythm guitarist Jon Myron Clark.

Then there's always my uncle, Robert "Sonny" Johnson. A great of the 50's - 70's. Can't find much info on him on YouTube. But check out The Johnson Montgomery Quintet. My uncle is considered one of the best jazz drummers ever. Played with Lionel Hampton, Quincy Jones and of course Wes Montgomery among tons of others.

Recently got a Yamaha electronic drum kit after 50 some odd years of tapping fingers, playing on coffee tables with chop sticks and grinding my teeth to the beat. Right up there with playing the kit is watching great drummers play their kits (real full size that is) I always wanted to play drums but never seemed to live in a place that would allow for it but now I just slap on headphones and knock myself out. Here is a list of drummers that I look up to even though some are no longer with us. There are tons of clips on youtube of all these greats.

John Bonham
Jeff Porcaro

I'm hoping you guys can provide more names of drummers that rate up there with these guys and to be fair, there are good female drummers out there also so do include them.
I figure there must be many good drummers I'm unaware of and I'm hoping you all can help me discover them.

Everybody acknowledges John Bonham, Neil Peart, Stewart Copeland are the standard of greatness. Here are some other great drummers that I use to air drum along with.

Rick Allen from Def Leppard before he lost his arm. He had a certain sound that caught your attention when he did a simply roll before his accident. Rick Allen still plays and tours with DL, now he plays using his feet with the drum kit setup is switched from his upper body to his lower body. Rick Allen is still accomplished drummer after he lost his arm in a car accident.

Phill Rudd from AC/DC. his intro on "Back In Black" gets that classic started.

Alex Van Halen on "Hot For Teacher". It's hard to get credit when your little brother is the best generational guitarist of 80's.

Kenny Aaronoff(sic), John Mellencamp, Iggy Pop, studio player.

Alex Lifeson's guitar sound made me a fan of RUSH. And you're right about Neil Peart's drumming. He grabs your attention immediately. I love the solo work he did on the "Hockey Night In Canada" theme song a few years ago. Neil combined two of my favorite joys in life, Hockey and RUSH.
