I'll start by saying this has never happened before. I'm not sure if this is directly related to on-going events in Ukraine but this is odd. In the past 30 minutes there have been at least 8-10 large military aircraft, like those transporter planes flying very low - lower than normal - passenger planes I see daily (as I am right under a flight path). I'm not too familiar with the RAF bases nearby in the South but I am quite perplexed. Anyone else in London that has seen this?

EDIT: These planes look like C-17's and/or Hercules. Large and bulky. Another one has just flown over.

Funny thing about airplanes, they fly. How high were they AGL? Where are you located in London? Most likely just moving some equipment, planes or people about. WW3? Not unless the SAC base near me drains out......

Large transport aircraft such as the C17 and C130 are usually based at RAF Brize Norton which is over in Oxfordshire; not too far from London. What was their bearing? if they were headed W/WNW, they may be returning from some sort of prior detachment?

The only way I can put it since I'm not an aeronautical expert is that I can see the tail and the underbelly of the aircraft. They are flying that low. I can even see passenger planes flying much, much higher so much so I can only see those flashing white lights every few seconds. I've just been doing a bit of digging and it appears that the RAF's C-17's are part of the Joint Rapid Reaction Force. It could be nothing but it's just strange because the only sort of military aircraft we see are army Chinooks and the occasional army helicopter.

I'm in South London and they were going in the direction of Gatwick Airport. As I say I live underneath a flight path where planes fly every few minutes. I've never seen this before though.

Do you think you would have noticed them in the past (are the extra loud for example)? If they are flying low that means getting ready to land so as long as they are your planes and not someone else's. Wikipedia - which is user generated and updated by specialists in whatever it is your looking at says you guys only have 8 C17's so maybe they are flying in from Canada. If you have seen more than this, it's a bit odd - unless doing a cargo plane sale/swap.

en.wikipedia.org...
(Bottom of page shows number each County has).

They were incredibly loud which is what peaked my interest. I went to let the dogs out and heard this loud sound. I've looked up and seen these aircraft pass over in quick succession. No more have flown over now. In total there were at least 8-10.

EDIT: No more have flown over now. All I can see are your normal passenger planes flying high. The thing which struck me the most was the high tails on them and the bulky look. I guess that's because they were flying quite low. Very odd.

They are more than likely getting some seat time in.

Honing their skills just in case.

You should see if you can't keep a camera ready and take a picture of them flying over if you see/hear any more.
That certainly is interesting.

I remember right before the gulf war seeing a lot of military aircraft I had never seen in my skies before.
Big transport planes....

If your not used to seeing them I can see why it would raise an eyebrow. I saw some choppers flying over our town last year and it made me uneasy since they can easily go around the town (and in fact going around is more desirable due to the mountains). I'm in the US but no matter where you are it makes you wonder.

What I want to know - if bringing in cargo - why so much to one spot (the whole fleet)? We are upsetting Russia right now so I'm glad you posted but hopefully these planes won't be connected to any of that - being one of those hindsight things that sent a clue to the public that more is going on than is being reported.

Iv seen it before here in Kent a few dozen miles out.

Twice.

2001 and 2003

The 2003 one had some US craft mixed in too. A-10 Thunderbolts Im guessing they were refueling at a USAF base here and going over with the British.

Not saying anything will happen but it seems a big troop movements afoot.

I used to live in South London (Wandsworth) and I've also seen them back in 2001.......and once more after that but I can't remember when.......but I remember 2001.

My guess it there probably just doing some readiness training.

I wouldn't be too worried unless the UK reserves are called up. Or you see US planes mixed in with the bunch.

They could possibly have come from RAF Northolt in west london have seen military planes over london before more often the helicopters though but never in the numbers you are speaking of could be a training exercise though.

I have noticed a little more activity over Yorkshire (Eurofighter or Tornado) but not OTT.

I wonder of this - as it seems to involve heavy planes - to do with the withdrawal of troops and equipment from Afghanistan?

I have been noticing a lot more military crafts in the air than usual, here in California. I live oh about 15 miles from Travis AFB and there seems to be a lot of extra activity. Two weeks ago at 10pm 5 jets flew over, lots of chinook looking helicopters too. Wonder if they are practicing, here anf there, allies?

hmm, the last few weeks we have been having Apache helicopters fly over, 3 of them together today, never seen them before these last few weeks, we have typhoons, tornados and f-18's practically everyday though, im inbetween two RAF bases.

I'm sure we will see more military exercises until Putin decides he's done with his little quest. It makes sense that we would see things like this more often right now, especially since if one wrong move is made in a NATO country WWIII becomes a reality.

Btw, I live in a city surrounded by 4 U.S. military bases, I haven't seen (or heard) any more activity than usual yet. If I do, I'll post it here.

I live a few miles from RAF Benson and RAF Brize Norton and see infrequent traffic overhead.

Been a little busier than normal, and a fair few private jets flying over too which always makes me wonder, but it's not enough to suggest build up for WW3 immediately.

Should be careful about posting troop movements, loose lips and all that - Mi5 might lock you up to avoid leaking information to the enemy (half joking).

But seriously, who really wants this war?

I am worried these tossers are just about crazy enough to start the conflict - to cover their own crimes under the chaos, and to justify their existence.

This current time is crucial for human society, the internet is enabling humble people to expose the tricks used to previously enslave them.

This is why TPTB , or I should say the Bankers and their Government plant lapdogs, need a pretty big distraction to nip this new thrust for freedom in the bud.

Lets not let them have another dark ages.
