Brazilian researchers discover asteroid with rings link

The European Southern Observatory announced this week the discovery of rings around an asteroid 1.4 billion miles from Earth. Chariklo is the largest of the class of asteroids orbiting the sun between Saturn and Uranus known as Centaurs. Results were published online today in the journal Nature.

Not nibiru but cool enough I'd say!!!

Awesome! How long before someone comes in and claims it's the Galactic Federation coming to our rescue...

Space and the thought of it being infinite just boggles my mind. There's no telling what lurks out there just beyond our vision and grasp.

Ah thats cool i guess, but i was expecting something more.... well more.

If all it was was an asteroid with a ring, why didnt they just tell us right away, why the suspense?

I guess I'm out of the betting pool on this one... I had them "discovering that dark matter is simply made of dumb ideas... which is why it is so darned dense"...

Very cool though... whooda thunkit?

"So, as well as the rings, it's likely that Chariklo has at least one small moon still waiting to be discovered," added Ribas.

I have never heard of an asteroid with rings! It could also have at least one moon? WOW! I would love to see HD pics of this! Thank you for the post!

I wonder if Neil Degrasse Tyson and his evil cabal over at the
"Planetary Definition League" are going to chime in and let this
"big ringed-rock" take poor, poor, Pluto's place...

You recall Pluto got demoted from "planet" for being too small
and too far away.

Anyone see the original "Starman" movie? The craft at the end basically had rings. Make ya wonder!

I imagine since it's the first object of its kind it's a pretty big deal to them!! I was hoping they found our Sun's binary companion myself haha

This is great news, thanks for sharing. We all know what the rings mean: The Galactic Federation is coming to our rescue!

Might have been me, figured I'd start a new thread to separate discussion from speculation.

I was first, nah nah nah! www.abovetopsecret.com...
And it's perfectly ok to discuss the news in that one big thread.

It's still gonna be a while until the media anounces it, BUT WE ALREADY KNOW mwahaaaaaaaa!
That's why I love ATS.

I'm more excited to see the pictures.

Hope they publish them soon!

I guess the artist's rendering will have to do...

Yes because discovering something that was previously thought impossible is just so weak.

You're in for a disappointment then. There are no pictures of the rings around this asteroid. They were detected when the asteroid occulted a star, and several observers in different locations detected "dips" in the light from the star both before and after the asteroid had moved in front of it.
