On Friday, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer predicted the passage of his journalist protection bill, with 60 votes already lined up behind it.

“It’s very, very likely the Senate will pass a bill this year,” Schumer said. “Just about every Democrat is for the bill. … We have five Republicans on record being for it, three of them are co-sponsors.”

Senate Inches Closer To Journalist Protection Law

Dont let the name fool you, Just like the Patriot act, it does just about the opposite of its name.

It contains things like a "journalist" Needs to be a registered with a RECOGNIZED news organization to have Protections granted by freedom of the press.

and also, this little gem.

in the case of national security disclosures, requests to quash demands for sources can not be considered if it can be shown that the requested information could prevent an act likely to harm national security interests. The bill permits exceptions in regards to the advance notice news organizations would get if their records are being subpoenaed and to where journalists can be subpoenaed in times of a national security risk.

And of course Senator Feinstein is a major force behind this bill, and it looks like it will pass...

Feinstein’s Bill to Kill Free Speech of Independent Journalists ‘Has Votes’ to Pass Senate

Essentially, if you don’t work for the likes of the dying mainstream media, the government can (and will) subpoena any journalist to force them to reveal their sources or face prosecution. Apparently, as described by one of the nation’s biggest hypocrites, the First Amendment only applies to some people and the government should get to decide who those people are. According to the bill, any information that “in purpose, subject matter and period of time covered so as to avoid compelling disclosure of peripheral, nonessential or speculative information.” could potentially be subject to Big Brother’s sticky fingers. You can see the two different versions of the bill here and here and Feinstein’s journalism crushing amendment here.

From perhaps a slightly more slanted article.

Act I: Intelligence agencies investigates itself and classifies the report that found it was guilty of wrongdoing.
Act II: Whistleblower informs people that agencies have been spying on everyone
Act III: Congress learns that spying included them during the investigation.

Act IV: Outrage by congress! Congress rallies to protect rights and liberty.
Act V: Tables a new bill for 'protection of journalists'.
Act VI: The emperor and darth vader kill all the Jedi?

Amazing how it all just looks like a epic story in the end. Better than anything fiction...

It seems *after* they arrest and ridicule and criticize "journalists", they all-of-a-sudden cast the grand illusion that they appear to be all in favor of an "un-censored" 1st Amendment.

Schumer, Feinstein and Reid are NOT up for election this year.

They can afford to play scapegoat.

This is just one more trick to make people *think* they are Holy and wholesome.

More so after Feinstein comes out against spying, since it happened to her...

I can't even understand how she has been doing this crap for SOOOOO long.

I don't think people understand what this bill means.

IT MEANS, that if say an ATS member gets an "exclusive" as has happened here before.

IF the government deems it a "security" issue, they can Censor, arrest and detain the member.

Why, because hes not a REGISTERED JOURNALIST and a threat.

This is state sanctioned NEWS.

The "spying" *outrage* is part of the same election year illusion.

They seem to be "against" everything they have been in favor of.

Typical tactic. Blame somebody for your own guilt and offer-up a sensationalized solution.

Well, It works so well on all the gullible masses.

But it's all for the good of the empire.

The disconcerting part is that most people will be under the impression this is a good bill, aimed at protecting journalists. Theatre at its finest. Indeed.

If they can't bring down the 1st Amendment one way, they kill it in another. Licensing journalists is just another way to make sure the state controls the message by controlling who can distribute it.

Hopefully the ATS ownership will petition to be a RECOGNIZED news organization forthwith. Once completed - all members should be automatically registered as journalists and our posts will be protected.

What a flockin' joke....

absolutely, it is disturbing how far we have come, and how little outrage it causes, as we fall further down the path of tyranny.

Oh, they are much more devious than that.

“The bill’s protections would apply to a “covered journalist,” defined as an employee, independent contractor or agent of an entity that disseminates news or information. The individual would have to have been employed for one year within the last 20 or three months within the last five years.

And the big media corps and newspapers will lobby for it because they are already indignant at being scooped by the little guys on the 'net. You'll hear no outrage from them. They want their monopoly back and see this as the way to get it. They'll get in bed with the government happily enough. If word of this is going to get out, it will be all on the people's shoulders.

I think someone means just like Carters FISA act of the 70s, or Clintons Omnibus counter terrorism bill of the 90s.

Anyways we already have a 'journalist protection law'.

It is called the first amendment of the US constitution.

Schumer ?

What a joke.
