If that is the case... how do they still succeed with this method?

Get folks ready to kill.. for their own gains?

By stirring up nationalistic fervor under false pretense. I think that plan works more effectively in former east bloc / SSR nations, who spent decades under a system that told them what to think / fell on all manners of society and politics / economics etc etc.

In the west we bitch about companies that exploit natural resources.
In the old east, those resources belonged to the "Russian people" that was administered via the government thru government corporations.

Not much different than the west with the exception of independent thought and an ability to look beyond what the government tells us.

Disagree with government actions in the west and we have sites like this.
Disagree with government actions in the east and we have people going missing in the middle of the night.

Depending on which side you were brought up on determines how long a person / their family allows them to keep shooting their mouth off.

Ukraine is not part of NATO. EU does have a military council though.

I read this on Wikipedia" As the Helsinki Headline Goal became fulfilled, the European Council of June 2004 approved to further develop the EU’s military crisis management capability and a new target was set: the "Headline Goal 2010".[8] EU members made the commitment that by the year 2010, at the latest, they would be capable of responding "with swift and decisive action applying a fully coherent approach" to the whole spectrum of crisis management operations covered by the Treaty of the EU and the 2003 EU Security Strategy (i.e. humanitarian and rescue tasks, disarmament operations, support to third countries in combating terrorism, peacekeeping tasks and tasks of combat forces in crisis management, and peacemaking). The EU also aims to address the shortfalls from the previous headline goal (e.g. gaps related to strategic airlift and sealift) which are still considered to be a limiting factor to the operability of the designated forces, especially in more demanding crisis management operations"
