They've always maintained that they were a christian organization. (I don't know how, but that's always been their assertion) I'm not particularly surprised that the Klan has enjoyed a resurgence in the last 6 years. (we all know why)

If you are genuine about your goals you drop a label that is too far gone. You want to carry your cause, not your label. No national socialist in Germany would unite under the label of the National Socialist German Workers' Party. Also the KKK was an insurgency in the wake of the civil war formed with the specific goal to counteract its outcome, first and foremost the relations between white Americans and Arican-Americans, which in a way makes the label KKK more impossible to hold and alter than that of the NAZI party, a party which started out as a genuine national socialist party but then was taken over by players whom had anything but socialism, communism or anything that wasnt imperial expansionism and genocide on their mind.

They've been banging that drum since day one. Of course like most "religious" groups their specific flavor is the only "true" version hence the hatred of Catholics. The Klan is supposed to follow some Protestant offshoot.

I dont think anyone should be surprised by a (sort of) black President spurring on membership. When people feel threatened they often gather to reinforce their views. Obama's election didnt create any new bigots. They were always there. It just incited some to join up as a means of fighting for what they believe in.

Same with the gun sales surging and NRA memberships growing. The Democrats have a history of attacking guns and followed through last year and gun owners so those who felt threatened by a Democrat administrations likelihood of going after guns got up and and got together.

The Tea Party before it was co-opted and ruined came about as a response to Bush's fiscal restraint lies immediately followed by Obama's continuation. People who were sick of the spending got together.

When attacked people defend. It doesnt matter who they are or what they believe in they still defend. Part of that defense is to group together.

The bank "thingy" occurred in 2008.

When the future is in doubt it gives pause in ordinary peoples minds about the stability of the nation. When people get unsure of their governments direction they tend to gravitate to other "poles". A little anger breeds a little extremism and maybe a little Payback.

Historically this is one reason fringe groups rise to power and wars break out.

You mean, like Obama? He was a member of a church that was lead by a racist. I'd dare say that whole organization was anti-white. Yet, that's OK?

I'm not a member of the KKK, in fact I'd probably be targeted as I'm a "race traitor". However, I don't see the difference between the KKK, Black Panthers or Wright's Church and Obama's participation. If a KKK member shouldn't be in office, neither should Obama.

I believe, the problem is that the leader of the KKK, is dealing with a name that is in short damaged goods. He wants to portray himself as the leader of a non violent organization, that is religious in nature, but when others use the same name to spew hate and violence, when there is a clear cut past history of such, kind of makes one shy away and think it is a hate group. After all if they are able to change the opinion about themselves, what other radical religious organizations could do the same, I can think of a few and chances are they are not going to have that easy of a time either.

The KKK is historically a hate group that not only sanctioned, but carried out countless cold blooded murders. If this modern version of the group is a peaceful religious organization, then one must ask: Why use the name Klu Klux Klan? Are all the other good names already taken? These tool bags are doing nothing more than trying to hide behind the First Amendment.

Pobably because of Christian Identity. Christian Identity runs around promoting the sorts of things the Klan would be proud to be part of. IMO Christian Identity does as much good for us as Westboro does. I'm not going to put up any links. If you want to go see it, Google it.

Many KKK members were originally mostly Christians, by a large margin. However the modern/newer KKK members largely are not. There are many who are now of various religious backgrounds be it Atheist, Agnostic, Odonist or Pagan just to name a few. Although they all stand for the same basic general cause, it's important to know that there are many variations in group members and each hold their own identity, that although a large amount were/are still are very much violent and racist, it's equally important to note that not all of them are violent or practice racism, hate or bigotry. It's also not unheard of for members to still be Christians, but not as common as it once was.

I'm loving all the righteous indignation taking place on this thread.

People can pretend all they want that they don't understand but nobody is buying it. They've always been a Christian organization, they've always been driven by ignorant fear of others, and they've always acted surprised when people don't back up their stupidity.

If they truly wanted to escape the "stigma" of a "few bad apples" (who seem to be the majority of them), then they would drop the name and call it something else.

Just my two cents to toss in, having known and still knowing a couple Kluckers over the years. They are Christian enough, and it's really not for anyone else to declare a group is or isn't, either way in my opinion. Having said that, we can certainly note how some Christians take and warp the 'Word' as much or more than happens in any other Faith, anywhere else in the world.

After all, the KKK would shudder at the comparison, but they made their bed. They can enjoy their bed mates. Other Christian and EXTREMELY racist organizations of recent note would be The Covenant, The Sword and The Arm of the Lord and as well as Christian Identity. Those are both about as 'Christian' to a mainstream Christian as Usama Bin Laden's little prayer group was Muslim to a mainstream person of that Faith.

Hate comes in all flavors. Like ice cream at a Baskin-Robbins store.
