Ah - if it's only about saving one's "ass" (whatever that might mean in any particular context - and I am NOT being sarcastic), then I suppose you are right. It's not necessarily a moral attitude, but I can understand that.

Unless one is a "super-power", however, such neutrality usually involves some sort of pact - one that people may not even be aware of at the time.
And there is no such thing as a free lunch.
Well, in my house there is - but not in international politics. : )

Amen to that Slayer. If they want to be with mother russia they should pack their bags and start steppin.

I had the unfortunate pleasure of being a supervisor over a whole shift of mexican employes.
They hated there jobs and America. All they could do was sit and bitch about the job and how bad they hated the
USA.So i suggested that if the hated the US so much then they should go back.I then fired every one of them.

I was providing an analogy...I realize that my statements about Obamacare/affordable care act pertain to the United States. I was pointing out how similar those bald-faced lies are. Russia can claim, all they want, that Estonia has nothing to fear from them...just as all the "hyperbole" about the affordable care act was just that...a lot of hot air.

And as far as us "Yanky's" being over there...I'd be just as happy (as happy as hell) to bring all our boys/girls/consultants/advisors/equipment back home to Yankland. I'd be thrilled to death to have the billions and billions this country dumps into the hands of the rest of the world kept at home to help its own citizens.

Unfortunately, the fact remains that every time some tyrant decides to expand his territory or oppress his citizenry, somebody always has to drop what they're doing and help...that's why (in the first place) we are "over there."

I stand by my post...this is the slippery slope that led Hitler into Austria and Poland...and created havoc, death and destruction in the rest of Europe.

But go on back to sleep, folks...stick your head back in to the sand.

I posted this in the duplicate thread that will probably be closed before I realized it was a duplicate thread so here it is again.

Doesn't it seem strange that the situation in Crimea has been likened to actions that lead up to WWII by Nazi Germany and here is this guy (Putin), who is very intelligent and knows his history and what the West is saying, just goes right ahead and plays the script perfectly, the corpse of Ukrainian Crimea still warm and he is saber rattling again? THIS IS A SET UP My BS radar is going off the scale.

Yeah, Russia is going to take on NATO, that will end well, you honestly think Putin is STUPID? Last time Russia tried to invade Finland they got their asses handed to them.

Putin is not going to attack NATO or the EU, he will stop NATO moving towards him yes, that is why Ukraine is in the mess it is, NATO Expansion.

My country is not in NATO, we don't give a frack about NATO, we are neutral, we are in Europe, we don't fear Russia.

What and who we DO fear, is America, their rendition flights and the risk they bring to our neutrality.

America does NOT respect our neutrality, they flew rendition CIA flights in our airspace and landed. America has NO respect for laws. That is a fact. If they did, they would have not used our airspace for illegal activities. Honestly Yanks don't give a frack about us here, except when it suits THEM and honestly, I don't give a frack about them, as long as they stay the HELL away from my country.

Granted Russia will target non NATO nations to start with. Places like Ukraine and Finland who though they could be sort of pro NATO but, not join hoping that would protect them are learning that being a quarter in is not the same as an attack on one is and attack on all. With what has happened in Crimea I would not be suprised to see NATO fast track some waiting members, Bosnia, Montenegro, Georgia, and Macedonia. And along with that I would suprised to Finland and Sweden also become full members before Russia decides to grab a few things from them.

Hello, we don't fear him here, you may wish to live your life of hyperbole and drama but we live in reality here and we are NOT in NATO and IN the EU, why on earth would we fear Russia?

We fear America more. No joke.

You see this is exactly the problem, NATO expansionism.

We will never join NATO, the second we do, our asses are kissed goodbye along with our neutrality status.

Your PM is saying the exact opposite. That Finland is not nuetral and reserves the right to join NATO anytime it wants. Of course I am sure the new Russia base just opened on the Finish border has a bit to with that.

Putin is not nuts. Why would he invite a war with NATO of which Estonia is a member of. Russian military does not stand a chance against 28 nations and one of which is the mighty USA.

Putin is not even going to get spicy in Eastern Ukraine, until and unless there is total open assault on Russian population with 100s getting killed each day. Instead he will try to get more cozy with China and middle eastern states.

How can a country with 1.5 million citizens defend itself from a nation with 143.5 million citizens without having strong allies?

Strategically there is near to no chance winning the battle against Russian full-force. Currently the whole defense is built on NATO - being able to defend the country´s territory until NATO forces arrive - there is just no other way, as size-wise the army and its budget are inexistent compared to Russian ones.

Finland is the example. It is not in NATO, it is neutral. Finland profit from russian tourists a lot. And Rossia does not invade Finland, and so far no any intention for that from Putin. Yes, in the ww2 has been war with ussr, but mainly it was finnish fault - Finland did join Hitlers coalition and Stalin felt threatened.
Ukraine has always been russian domain and it is Poland that threated (incl military) that "buffer zone" .
To be honest Estonia has profit a lot during ussr time, a lot. So was with all baltic countries.

Wrong! Finland IS neutral. I remember when 10+ years ago there was "join NATO" discussion and the best point of argument was that finnish prosperity is due it's neutrality. Finland didn't join Bush (regime) gang after 911 because of it's neutrality.

Lol. You actually believe this waffle you are writing? Which USA designated tyrant are you referring to...are you calling Putin a tyrant? He is no tyrant, not by any stretch of the imagination.

Russian troops went into the Crimean region after Russia was asked to give aid by local Crimean leaders. Putin had to get authorisation from the Russian 'upper' house before he could send troops in...they gave him authorisation. Russia states that military movements are in line with protecting its fleet in the Black Sea, and the majority Russian population...not a single shot is fired, not until warning shots are fired at unarmed Ukrainian soldiers advancing towards Russian troops at the international airport.

Russia has not done anything that America hasn't already done in the past and wouldn't do in the present, which is to protect its interests and people. The West cannot claim the right to do this but deny it to other countries. Regardless of what western media tell you, the elections held in the Crimea were legitimate (certainly as legitimate as any of the 2 Bush elections), and obviously, the majority Russian population won the vote. The West failed in its coup to receive the Ukraine into the EU and thus diminish and undermine the power base of Russia and Putin. Western machinations are being used against Russia and Putin due to his upmanship over Obama on a number of issue, including Syria, and he continues to retain that upmanship, not because he is a better leader, but because his actions are as legitimate as any Obama would seek.

The West will continue to seek to be a thorn in Putin's side, and seek to further influence more strife in the Ukraine. Putin is the target, the West cares little of the Ukrainian people.

How is being set back by decades profiting?

Tens of thousands of people were sent away in animal trains to Siberia, while Russian people were being shipped in. The russianization polices, incredible propaganda and lies were trying to make the local language/culture die out. Luckily all this had the opposite effect and underground movements started at first, which led to the singing revolution laterwards in the 1980s - hundreds of thousands of people coming together and singing national songs - that is what kept this small nation´s spirit alive. The Baltic nation were taken by force by a foreign country. None of them wanted it, but unfortunately other nations did not care enough to do something about it. That is why the Baltic Chain was formed at first -700 mile human chain- to show the world that Baltics wanted out, that people wanted independence from the Russian oppressors. And later luckily they got out from the regime.

No Estonian wants Soviet-like regime back.

Finnish fault? War which started by the shootings of Mainila by Russians and Russia did admit after several decades ( 1988 ) that they started it. Winter war is something Russians are not proud of and its one of the wars they don´t teach at history lessons at schools.
Finland asked help from league of nations which was denied which only led Finland to seek help elsewher, any help to be able to protect their country against invader..
