The 777 is horribly inefficient at low altitude. Even that close they'd be hard pissed to make it.

When was the last time that they never received a ping from a crashed Airliner's black box? The answer to that question is very important concerning this case. ~$heopleNation

I find it hard to believe they weren't tracking it on radar and know exactly what direction it ended up going.

You need to read up on the differences between civilian and military radar systems.
Civilian radar have VERY short range(s). They rely on the airborne transponders to more than double their range.
Without the transponer the range is limited to a bit over 50 miles.

If you turn of the transponder the plane will disappear very quickly after take off.
