Keep in mind that we are giving tax breaks to oversee corporations who own these companies...it's not even necessarily American companies that benefit...

What a great idea! I only paid $3.39 for my gas this week. That's down a whole $1 from not too long ago. I almost felt like a guilty fool taking my fuel at such low low prices.

What better time to tweak the oil companies just a bit more? After all, they never..ever..pass those things along to the pump price right? Never happens.

Sure... It'll destroy people in the short term, who are barely making ends meet from all the other stuff already crushing them from a dozen different bad ideas, but we're selfish to think that way. After all, we need to crack some eggs to make these green omelette, right?

Hope and Change...indeed.

Wait ... are those cage free hens? Remember, the California voters have decided that everyone's eggs must now be more expensive in order to please them.

(grumble grumble) California ought to get it's eggs by the pallet weight from the open end of bomb bay doors. (grumble)

I take it you heard about the Missouri / California Egg wars..... Stupid Left coasters have egg on their face as a morning ritual, I think.

(Pardon my harsh approach...but the only chickens with a problem in California work in Sacramento, they don't occupy a hen house)

I knew the oil wells would go dry before any newcomers could enjoy the business. Yeah my family owns mineral rights in North dakota. About a good 13 zones.

I knew that the us would eventually give up on oil. I bet they might go for vacuum cars. Joking of course.

I am sure you are safe for the next fifty years. But if I were in your position, I would think about the future and invest in alternative fuels, too. You may not live long enough to reap the rewards, but I bet your descendants will.

Let's not call it welfare, call it what it is extortion. If the oil companies did not get these subsisdies (welfare, extrtion payment's) I'd tend to believe they would gouge the consumers to keep at their current profit margin's.

That's the problem.... Giving NEW subsidies won't take $0.01 off our gallon pump price....but take away even a small one and they'll bump the price by a dime overnight. God help anyone who commutes to work if they take away any large ones....but then, maximum pain inflicted upon the American public by way of regulatory changes at every turn seems to be the order of they day.

In that way, it'll succeed.

Along with the subsidies should have been a price cap at around $1 or so.

Oh, but wait, that's socialist/communist/tyrannical etc.

On a greatly reduced scale, if I do business with someone, and I want to make it affordable for them to do business with me, i.e. I like their product, style, philosophy, etc., then I do from time to time "subsidize" their efforts. I had a carpenter a few years ago who was a virtual genius with wood and nail. He was just starting out in his own business, and so, I gave him work that I could have gotten done far more effectively in less time by other contractors. However, that "subsidy" made it possible for him to build his own business to the point that now, I get his high quality work at my original prices, whereas others might pay twice or three times my rate.

I don't see how a ten year or so price ceiling based on taxpayer billions in subsidies would have been so tyrannical.

Instead, we see these companies posting extreme and unprecedented profits while we pay twice.

Principle...and it's always about two things with this sort of idea, in my opinion. Principle and Precedent. Once they violate the principle and set a precedent which people accept? That $1 to helpfully control things today and what we all thought was a dandy idea will be the $5 or $10 ordered by the same precedent...now established and demanded to be followed...later.

Giving up freedom for security ...is how we lose everything we have and wonder, sipping soup from a bowl, how it ever got to that point?

Letting Government nationalize to price fix (which would be required to have any legal framework) on direct control is far far worse that anything I might suffer by corporate misdeeds at the pump. Corps aren't the answer, but Government is the absolute wrong one. Always.

If the economic laws of supply and demand actually were allowed to work, we wouldn't be in this mess but speculators have knocked the market into the twilight zone.

A corrupt economic system based on perceived need, only favors the small but controlling wall street and banking elite who have and use inside knowledge.

Think fuel is high priced now? Wait till the wars start. A gallon of gas in Afghanistan for the military costs $400 in the field.

Big profits for someone all funded by the US taxpayers.

Let's cut food stamps and welfare so we can keep the oil companies properly subsidized!!

Good for Obama. There is little logic anymore to providing subsidies to big oil and gas companies, most of whom are extremely profitable. Just like bad water and electricity subsidies in other countries such as India, these subsidies reduce the real cost of these fuels AND promote overuse by both individuals and industry. This is born out in much economic research. Furthermore, this is basically a negative subsidy towards developing alternatives to fossil fuels, which we desperately need to develop more.

Dude, we have to move away from dependency on fossil fuels. Continuing to subsidize and be reliant on them only kicks the problem forward more years. It's basically in one way passing the buck to the next generation. These subsidies and prices do not reflect the true externalities of fossil fuel use. It has been calculated that if we actually include all of the externalities(environment, air, climate change, etc), many alternative fuels such as solar and other actually become cost efficient.

First of all oil subsidies are like 1% compared to alternative subsidies which is 5% and more. I don't think oil executives care much about the subsidies.

2nd the goal of the alternative energy BS is to destroy the American economy because the dollar is backed by oil. They rather buy oil from different countries which was the agreement they had for decades to get them to join the NWO.

3rd if Obama really cared about alternative energy he would release the real alternative energy inventions that have been buried away buy the government, like HHO water fuel or magnetic motors, not a bunch of expansive and useless alternative energy like Solar, Wind, and Ethanol which greedy corporations made deals with the government to get rich with useless products.

That is outstanding idealism and it's what forms progress. I agree. We absolutely DO need to move away from fossil fuels. They're ineffecient, pollution heavy in most forms and physically hard on the land like nothing else, in all forms.

However, no one gives extra points for martyrdom here, and if we hurt the fuel we require...absolutely require..to have a functional economy before the alternatives fully mature? No one will care but to laugh at our own folly of cutting off our nose to spite our face.

Granted, the $1 or less a gallon I paid before 9/11 and right up to the day before, actually....will never return in our lifetimes. That's a shame, but good too, in that no one took anything about alternatives seriously without higher rates to push.

Unfortunately, no one took shale oil seriously either (it had been found and developed for recovery in the 70's) because the prices weren't high enough to make that recovery method profitable. So...with higher prices came more push for alternatives, but also brought profit to one of the single most destructive methods man has yet devised to get the stuff. Mixed bag to say the least.

In the end though, given how MANY ways our economy is under pressure and stress from so many different "Doh! This looks like a great idea!" initiatives and programs started in recent years, we need to stop doing MORE injury to what directly sustains and supports our ability to live above 3rd world poverty levels.

The fact some folks cannot, to save their own futures...see the straight line of connection to these things, is truly scary at times.

There's a way around that IF the gov't was willing to do it. Tax and enforce the oil companies. They gouge, gouge them even further by taxation. Pass that back to the consumer. Yeah, like they would.

Ahh... You make logical sense. You'd never have any hope or future in Government, I'm thinking. Neither would I for that matter, but I'd sure vote to try your approach, the more I think on that?

The oil companies would play the pass-along game through the first round, and likely the second round...they may even do it after some hesitation, following a 3rd round of 'pump price adjustments meet government tax adjustments'. I believe they'd be crying Uncle, literally, after the 3rd round and actually....REALLY..believed the Government was serious and wouldn't stop the tit for tat.

Even the mighty oil companies would wither before Uncle, if Uncle stuck to it and pursued something like that with meaning.

I could just imagine the calls at that stage 'If we roll back those pump prices...can you please please please roll back those taxes?'.

If only someone with the courage and savvy for getting things done could rise to a position to force that.
