Speaking at a press conference, Secretary of State Colin Powell said that the United States cannot accept the results of the Ukrainian election. Citing the numerous accusations of fraud and voting irregularities, Powell went on to warn that there would be consequences in the U.S. and Ukraines relationship. The announcement comes on the heels of the Ukranian government certifying that Kremlin-backed Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych has won the election.

WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Colin Powell said Wednesday the United States cannot accept the results of elections in Ukraine, which the opposition says was marred by fraud.

Powell warned "there will be consequences" for the United States' relationship with Ukraine as a result of the developments in the former Soviet bloc nation.

Powell spoke shortly after election officials in Ukraine declared that Kremlin-backed Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych won the election over opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko. The announcement raised fears of violence in Kiev, where tens of thousands of demonstrators have been demanding that the results be overturned.

It is going to be touch and go. If the allegations of fraud are true, we may indeed be on the brink of a civil war. The real question in these events is where the loyalty of the military lies. If they stay in one candidates camp, its pretty much assured that any attempts at civil unrest will be put down rather quickly.

Isn't that an internal affair for the Ukraine? What would the U.S. do if Russia said it cannot accept the results of the recent U.S. Presidential election, which many here say is marred by fraud?

Ahhh, this could turn ugly any second.
We will see a civil war, but the question is..will it be pretty or ugly to watch

The difference is that Russia has been heavily involved already in the affairs of the Ukraine. The candidate has close ties to the Putin government and given his consolidation of power, its not unreasonable to suspect that he may have a hand in influencing the election.

If I may speak on Thor's behalf, assuming he means this: It is such a bad joke that US is rejecting the election results of one nation on the grounds of fraud and foul play, when it is guilty of the same, over and over again. Really, it is a terrible joke.

election in Ukraine gave the right victor.
the election - with paper trail, transparent ballot-boxes and ballots manually counted by representatives of EACH candidate at each polling station, immediately after votes were casted.
So any candidate claiming there was fraud must provide one of these facts
- the name of the precincts that his representative refused to sign
- the sums of precincts for a particular district that don't match the sums provided by the electoral commission

Yushchenko provided NONE of these.

the results

BTW, no reasons to joke about this.
Place your bets. After all it's the end game.

I heard on the news one of the Election Monitors saying acid was being poured into ballot boxes to destroy evidence and that bus loads of illegal votes were being driven round polling stations.

It's about time Canada stepped up for something. But what actions would Canada actually take upon the Ukraine? In other words, what difference does it make? Yes it looks good on the national resume, but thats about it.

too bad the rest of the world would not step up to the plate and state,"World Does Not Except US Voter Fraud." maybe a few would wake up here, then again, maybe not.
