Like another poster said, mostly from other sources, either more credible news sources or sites like Reddit, ie. they are posted there, then ATS and places like the Daily Mail online. Similarly as per this thread's 'conspiracy', the article and pictures were first posted on a Russian news site, then youtube, ATS and the Daily Mail.

So many times have I seen practically word for word article pasted from other 'similar' sites, often falsely claiming originality with little fake disclaimers like ''I stumbled upon this'' or ''I was wondering about something the other day and I randomly and originally came up with this'' etc.

I guess it's a star and flag thing for many on ATS.

For those of us that are here for less ego serving purposes, it does make the sifting more tedious and perhaps at least 80% of the content less worthy. I mostly read the first few lines of a thread and know if it's bunk and ignore it, but sometimes comment on it if it's sufficiently worthy of commenting on.

The irksome thing is when something you know is bunk gets 200 flags and zillions of stars followed by heaps of unwarranted, sycophantic praise for the poster. Along the lines of 'it's a conspiracy site, aimed at educating sheeple about the truth filled with sheeple buying BS in spades from egotists and charlatans' is there a freaking point at all style irksome.

Yes, I am very sure there is at least one dailymail staffer who reads ATS. Ive had the uncanny experience of having something I or another ATSer wrote appear as a dailymail headline one or two days later numerous times.

But thats how the Internet works. Material is re-tumbled and re-cycled all the time.

And lets be honest...for finding "story ideas", ATS is not too bad of a place.

Pretty much a coincidence then !

as for other users, it seems as though people just love proving others wrong for their own egotistical reasons of one up man ship

this is all ATS is now , who has a bigger ego, who knows more than you , who can write a paragraph better, who can research something better,

every thread on ATS just decends into a battle between the biggest egos on here
pretty boring after the actual OP has been read
every thread the same just a pissing contest

But this is the kind of ego-competition that brings forth some pretty awesome material.

It's about intellectual honesty.

The OP made a wildly boastful claim that fell far short of the truth.

It was Alexander Dugin who broke the "story" ("Blackwater troops in Russia" -which is false anyhow), on March 4. The video and screen cap images first appeared on the Web then. It showed up on Reddit also on March 4th.

US mercenaries deployed in Southern Ukraine
Voltaire Network | 4 March 2014

From there it spread to RT, Dailymail, and probably any other quasi-news site that is willing to publish unfounded claims without verifying them.

Its posts like this one that hurt ATS in my opinion in the eyes of Web users, instead of learning the truth or "denying ignorance," they get fed BS by someone with an agenda, or someone looking to stoke their ego with populist posts hunting for stars and flags, or posts that regurgitate the propaganda found on sites like Reddit. This is causing a trend on ATS of aping posts and topics found there or YT or elsewhere, making this site derivative of those - which only increases the hilarity of someone copying a post from there then boasting of "scooping the Web."

Seriously, knowing the OP's claims are not true, where does that leave this thread? Should it be in the hoax bin or LOL?

Where?

Seriously, knowing the OP's claims

What claims?

This one?

"I know it could simply be a coincidence that they just happened to take the same exact screens from the youtube video as I did but damn it if isn't eerily so? "

Or this one?

SLAYER69
Well, as I stated.

"it could simply be a coincidence"

I'm not being funny but the poster blackmarketeer is absolutely right in what he's saying.

You created this thread to say that the MSM are copying your work and and your pics to post in their publications.
You haven't said "they stole it!!" because you're more vague than that but your ARE alluding to it and the premise of your thread is that you broke a story and cropped images from a video that were exclusive and nobody else had posted.

Blackmarketeer has shown this to be utter nonsense and you have backtracked and are now flat out saying that he's misunderstood the threads point and that you weren't claiming anything and you already knew that RT beat you to it and blah blah blah...

That's rubbish

Just be honest.

As the guy says, intellectual honesty... you've done the very thing you've accused the DM and others of.
I'm sure status and stars and flags are far more important to you... but at least others can see what you've done and are calling you out on it.

I asked if 'ATS' scooped the Web?

I asked this because it was so similar. We've had quite a few members post threads and their views on this possibility in other unrelated threads. I admitted in my first and only sentence on this upfront that it could of been simply a coincident. Wouldn't you agree that it is? Also, I'm not responsible for others interpretations nor their projecting of what they perceive as my intent now am I?

Also I've been repeatedly accused of 'Making Claims'

I've asked more than a few times

'Where?"

With the large number of super-sharp minds we have here at ATS, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if we have more of an impact than we think we do. I tend to gravitate towards this site simply because there are so many different beliefs, methods, ideas, etc. all being voiced in one place. Of course it is up to the user to sift through the INTENSE amounts of information privided, but I can totally see ATS being an excellent source for MSM to utilize...for both positive and negative reasons.

It's nothing to do with anyone "projecting" or "reading into it", it is what you inferred and intended.
Of course you wont admit it because you're wrong and you've been shown to be wrong so it's easier to play games and pretend you never meant what you meant and you were innocently asking a question.

There was no question.... there was a statement which you happened to add a question mark to, just to cover yourself.

When another site stole your whole thread and posted it I was pissed off and felt for you...and ATS and all the members came out in support and ATS sorted it out.

This time... you are in the wrong and you can't admit it.

If you can't admit it mate, then I think it speaks volumes about you and your character.

Whatever man... stars and flags...number one poster... Yaaay...!!
make sure you keep your eyes on the prize dude.

Hmmm.. I've been putting a bit more thought into this and I'm coming back to a point of real confusion. There seems to be an assumption that MSM is somehow 'above' ATS in the pecking order of things (and in some real world ways, of course, it is) and by that, somehow, we are naturally trawling their pages for news without the reverse ever happening?

Well..I just want to add that journalists are normal people more like us here at ATS than we are like normal 'sleepy' people in the public. That is, they start each day...so deeply living in the general world of news and stories..like many of us are...that perspective and lack of "wonder" at the headlines leaves the basic grinding question everyday. NOW WHAT? What story now? What feature to dig into? Where to find the next topic for readers to dig into?

Well... Why not consider ATS as one of the sites others trawl for that as much as we do theirs? Folks here not only supply sourcing and usually multiple instances on big stuff (more than some MSM journalists do themselves) but by definition, those reading ATS forums for lead ideas already have the handle for public approach and public reaction. All rolled into one little gift of a story lead they have AT LEAST 1/3rd of the work pre-completed by ATS members for.

Not a bad approach, when one really stops to think of it..and no wonder ATS things sometimes appear after the popping here with uncannily similar images, wording and perspectives, eh?

Well that's yours and a few other members interpretations.

I'm not going to argue the point further. If you and some of the others want to see this as something else have at it.

It is what it is.

BTW, I like your newish Avatar

Likely because ATS forums are filled with more incredulity than credible substance.

Not a shortcoming of the management, just the human condition. You probably wouldn't know because you haven't been here long enough to remember how "niche" ATS was going back to the early 2000's. At that time, there were incredibly intelligent BUT very radical ideas being thrown about. During that timeframe ATS was innovative and the people posting, radicalism notwithstanding, wanted absolute truth to a fault. ATS was THE place you came to to be heard on tabooish subject matter that would get discounted at more conservative levels.

While for most of us this was a boon, it would also be a stigma in any professional journalism....to credit ATS, even now, for original content, would be akin to Commercial or Military pilots claiming they have seen a UFO....straight to therapy.

I think some posters are being WAY too harsh on the OP. I guess once you hit a certain "status" on ATS, people just itch to find a good reason to slam you. I've noticed this happening to some of our higher "ranking" and high quality posters, (with very high star and flag counts) perhaps it's jealousy? I think that's it. These high quality posters often get accused of being "shills" etc as well. It's pretty pathetic in my honest opinion.

All the OP did was make a comparison and raise a question and you all jump on him and point fingers like "ooooo bad!!!". Then there is the whole "have fun with your stars and flags" comments. Totally un-necessary. There were no official accusations, the thread is open-ended enough for the reader to decide form him/her selves what they think with nothing definite. I guess if you have nothing better to do, then keep being drama queens, but unless you want to have a heart attack over it, then the best approach would be to get over it and stop with the personal attacks.

Totally agree, the OP was very surprised when the same screen save that he chose turned up somewhere else, and he made a thread to say "Hey!" It's one of those coincidences, and shows that "journalistic minds think alike". I enjoy coincidences which, or course, seldom are (Robert Anton Wilson wrote a book well worth reading imnho named "Coincidance: A Head Test" which has a Wikipedia page I can't get to link), and this OP's experience is a good one.

But then people start posting that the OP did something wrong? Weird, and totally off base. I write on another site, a satire site, and once we had a guy write a story which had the same title-premise that someone else had in their user space, and he was accused of stealing that title ("The Battle of the B_____ in my pants" if you must know, and now can't forget). Of course he didn't, but came up with it on his own after watching a movie, but that was about it for him, as he pretty much left the site after being accused. This OP better stick around and excel as he has always done, or else some of us will organize a rodeo/search party to lasso him and bring him back. At a minimum he's owed a few apologies, and I'll be the first to apologize to him for .....I'll think of something (or something will happen in the future) which I apologize and/or pre-apologize for.

Shall we conspire via PM's to create an elaborate hoax with pics and everything and see if they try to scoop it up? Make them look really really stupid if we could make it work.

to what end ... cant think what you , i , or anyone could possibly have to gain from that .. it seems a lose lose situation for everyone .. the paper that picks up the story loses... all the ATSers who were not in on your conspiracy will be quite pee'd off i imagine... and will be detrimental to ATS also i'd imagine ...

the idea is witty if humour, at most .. but i cannot imagine a single constructive reason for doing such a thing, where anyone has anything to gain in any good way at all .. and if we could strip the world of silly needless devious dishonest pointless plots like this ... what a slightly simpler nicer place it would be ... yadda yadda etc etc

And as pointed out, the RT images were posted March 07, 2014 13:04. That's 1:16 before your post. AND as pointed out, their exif data showed they made their images March 01, 2014 at 09:20. Five hours before your post. So clearly, they DID NOT copy anything from you.

It was obvious they didn't but to imply I copied theirs is bad form when one could obviously tell they are not exactly the same. Now, having said that, I never mentioned 'RT'

How sad

that these black marks attempt to derail and discredit Slayer69.
The black junks stills are different than what Slayer69 posted, how the mods allow
the black junk to get away with this is beyond me

Who's are the bigger fools here? The one who claimed to "scoop the Web" with material he found ON the Web, or the fools who rush to defend this practice because he's "popular"?

What happened to the old ATS, where users got to the truth no matter what? In two years this site has gone downhill, now its a competition to who can rush here to post headlines the first.

This post is slaying me, I thought it was a joke at first, but now I see the OP believes his own hype... oh dear, keep the egos in check, if that is to much to ask, otherwise we'll all feel violated by a lack of trust.

Good catch on the Alexander Dugin link Black, he is a Russian propagandist, it's too bad our vaunted ATS members would rather be fed lies than do any fact checking these days.
