If you made enough ice and had a well insulated storage box, you shouldn't need to run it at night unless it is an emergency.

Take an old ice house for example. They would cut these large ice blocks out of lakes during the winter and store them in an underground area that was insulated by gravel and straw. Those blocks were expected to last through the summer.

That works in climates where you get ice over winter, but where i live for instance, there are no running streams or rivers in summer and no ice in winter. As i mentioned in the op, climate makes a huge difference to what is possible
