I hate to be the sceptic here, but ... It's a nice story, with little proof of anything :S

He may seem trustworthy, but so does the pope, and the pope isn't holy...

Actually...you're wrong. A Fata Morgana only occurs in the thin band between the horizon and the object that's being being affected by the mirage. Meaning that if he was within 40 meters of the object as he said he was, there would be no Fata Morgana effect present because he would be too close for this sort of mirage to be physically possible..

A mountain....

For reference, this is a classic Fata Morgana....

Notice how far away the oil rig is? If you were within 40 meters of it, this wouldn't be happening.

I would explain it as simple as this. It was 1996, the UFO craze is on the up and up. The author saw an opportunity to jump up on that big UFO dick and have a ride so he did.

He made the whole thing up. Every word of it, and no one can tell him no because he's the only one who was there.

In a court of law, people have been tried and killed through the testimony of multiple witnesses alone. Here we have testimony of a pilot in close proximity for 15 minutes, sunbathers at a local beach and a control tower. You also have written evidence in the communication with the military that will have to have been documented. This is all "evidence".
The transparency of the Dairylea Debunkers is sooooo obvious its laughable. (Can I ask all members to make a log of all the debunkers that despite testimony. .totally bypass the facts such as an object moving at mach 10 and comparing it with a hot air balloon. .or *facepalms* ..a mountain. This way we can mount a case to eradicate these paid idiots to have a sensible discussion. This however doesn't mean anyone who simply disagrees..just the blatant regular debunkers with zero intelligence).

Great find OP. I hadn't seen this case before thank you!

you've nailed it on the head my friend!

Hello CaptainBeno,

I want to believe ! No photos causes me to look closely at art work. I have more than a little time in small slow aircraft.

I am always aware of retractable and fixed landing gear. My questions is why did the artist draw the RG aircraft with the gear down?

The aircraft picture is drawn in a configuration that would not have been applicable to the event reported by the pilot. This takes away from

the confidence in the report.

Thank you my friend.

It is evident to me that once you acknowledge the 300,000 reported UFO sightings per year (not counting all the unreported ones) and testimonials from Astronauts and Canadian Mod, and high ranking military personnel and pilots etc. You can finally say, yes Extraterrestrials exist..and they are here.

That then poses alot more questions.

Who are they? What do they look like? How many different races are there on planet earth now? What do they want? What ships do they fly in..or are they inter dimensional? Which are benevolent and which malevolent? ..do they really enjoy anal probes
(joke) which governments are working with which races?

The list goes on and on.. and the less time we can waste with the Dairylea Debunkers.. the better..and maybe, together, we can answer these questions and make positive progress for mankind in its entirety.. not just the rich elite..or a "need to know basis".

How exactly do you make the jump from something unexplained to aliens? Are you thinking that it couldn't be anything else? Because that's some pretty shaky logic. You can't take something that hasn't even been proven to exist and use it to "explain" an unknown. Might as well say it's a manifestation from "God." Or leprechauns.

As it is, it's an interesting story with no more evidence that can be investigated. The amount of information we can get from the story has maxed out, and we're still stuck at "nobody knows." I know it's hard to just accept that, but that's the only reasonable thing to do.

So here I am, once again shrugging and filing the story away as a curiosity. Not using it as more "proof" of extraterrestrials.

Jim? Are you there? Anyway, you sound like Oberg in that whatever it was, it couldn't have been a UFO because they don't exist.

So the experienced pilot was absolutely totally wrong in what he saw at close quarters and flew around, he didn't see anything startling that happened with the object and then the thing couldn't have vanished from his view in a blink because it was a balloon....and, and, oh, yeah, the three experienced witnesses on the ground that probably knew that it was a balloon and were going along with the pilot just to get themselves into the newspapers. Solved. Case closed.

Yes, you see many cases of circular logic with UFO's and other anomalous phenomenon.

Start with the premise that UFO's don't exist, then spin the evidence to fit that premise. Classic Oberg.

After a bunch of searching, I have found a source describing a few other witnesses reports of the UFO. Since this case is so little known (at least here in the US) there is very limited information on the internet. All of the info I've seen so far comes from Brazilian sources.

Westendorff approached the ship, and during the second lap around it, used the radio from the cockpit to inform the control room of the Brazilian Company of Airport Infrastructure (Infraero) of Pelotas airport on what was happening. Asked the operator Infraero Airton Mendes da Silva, 40, what he saw in the east sector toward the runway 15/33. "I looked out and saw an object on the horizon, in the form of a gray triangle with rounded edges," says the operator. In 11 years of working at the airport, Silva ensures never having seen anything like it. With him were the auxiliary port services Gilberto Martins dos Santos, 50 years old and 14 on-site service, and Jorge Renato S. Dutra, 31 years old and ten service, together they tried to identify the flying object. "He looked to the naked eye, the size of a high-voltage tower, compare Gilberto.'s Biggest surprise, however, came when they saw the ship moving in the vertical direction. Unaware aircraft on Earth that moves vertically as moved the object before disappearing into the clouds, "attests Airton. "I'd never seen a monster that size flying," says Jorge.

The english translation is rough, but you can get the gist of it.

ETA: Link isn't working for some reason. If you want to view this page, follow these steps:
1)go here (AFTER reading all instructions):www.google.com... s_sm=91&ie=UTF-8
2) go to the top link and click "translate this page"
3) once the page comes up, click "famous cases"
4) go to the link titled "westendorf"

at least that is the only thing that works on my computer

Another site describes how an investigations officer conducted interviews with not only the pilot but several other witnesses:

The Ministry of Aviation maintains an undercover investigation on the ship sighted by Westendorff. A sergeant of the Canoas Air Force Base traveled to Pelotas to collect the testimony of the businessman and of the Infraero officials. The sergeant asked for anonymity, but spent an afternoon at the airfield where he heard the eyewitness accounts and took knowledge of the episode.
www.prufon.net...

It appears that if this case is a hoax, Westendorf isn't the only one making it up.

Any other detailed reports, upon the thousands, of thousands of sightings give or take around the world?
With this massive ufo, with such an odd shape like an upside top, or with other ufo's coming out of the supposed'd hangar, that is located on top the craft?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a true believer, but if there isn't any others sighting of this craft, then it just doesn't build it repertoire.

Brazil has had several interesting UFO sightings. The Colares incident comes to mind. I think this pilot saw an extra-terrestial craft just dropping of "drones" to do some exploring in the Amazon basin.
I don't think he could have mistaken this sighting for a 100 yard long hot balloon, or mountain tops.
As another example, take the eyewitness testimony of the Phoenix lights and how many people saw a huge boomerang shaped dark craft with gigantic lights along its under side. Did anyone take any pictures? No, they were just too stunned to let go of such a sight.

I personally believe that the phoenix lights were individual craft, in a uniform position, instead of large, partially invisible craft.

Doesn't look like this:

When you spend 25 hours a week researching this stuff, you get a real good grip on what is truth and what is not..and how much people stand to lose from the clever passive mind control of the masses that provide a tsunami of ridicule.

I have absolutely no doubt that extraterrestrials are here.. so do 'the majority' of mankind. I appreciate that right now you either don't believe or are paid to not believe..but either way, it's only a matter of time until you do..until the whole world does.. and then we can cease this futile backwards and forwards..and instead work together for the benefit of mankind.

The Navy still practices with Orion space recovery capsules. But he would know the size of the object from how tightly he had to turn his airplane.

Oh awesome! A case I haven't heard before. Sweet!

This is amazing!

I truly believe that there are pilots who have seen "alien" craft. I really don't see how this could be something of our own making esp with the speeds these crafts seem to take on.

I see one member mentioned Vimana's and that is what I thought when I saw it too!

I honestly don't know what he saw but i"m going to say it was something not of our planet.

I will have to go through the thread and read the links on the case. Just wanted to say awesome thread! Thanks for sharing
