After a bunch of searching, I have found a source describing a few other witnesses reports of the UFO. Since this case is so little known (at least
here in the US) there is very limited information on the internet. All of the info I've seen so far comes from Brazilian sources.
Westendorff approached the ship, and during the second lap around it, used the radio from the cockpit to inform the control room of the Brazilian
Company of Airport Infrastructure (Infraero) of Pelotas airport on what was happening. Asked the operator Infraero Airton Mendes da Silva, 40, what he
saw in the east sector toward the runway 15/33. "I looked out and saw an object on the horizon, in the form of a gray triangle with rounded edges,"
says the operator. In 11 years of working at the airport, Silva ensures never having seen anything like it. With him were the auxiliary port services
Gilberto Martins dos Santos, 50 years old and 14 on-site service, and Jorge Renato S. Dutra, 31 years old and ten service, together they tried to
identify the flying object. "He looked to the naked eye, the size of a high-voltage tower, compare Gilberto.'s Biggest surprise, however, came when
they saw the ship moving in the vertical direction. Unaware aircraft on Earth that moves vertically as moved the object before disappearing into the
clouds, "attests Airton. "I'd never seen a monster that size flying," says Jorge.
The english translation is rough, but you can get the gist of it.
ETA: Link isn't working for some reason. If you want to view this page, follow these steps:
1)go here (AFTER reading all
2) go to the top link and click "translate this page"
3) once the page comes up, click "famous cases"
4) go to the link titled "westendorf"
at least that is the only thing that works on my computer
Another site describes how an investigations officer conducted interviews with not only the pilot but several other witnesses:
The Ministry of
Aviation maintains an undercover investigation on the ship sighted by Westendorff. A sergeant of the Canoas Air Force Base traveled to Pelotas to
collect the testimony of the businessman and of the Infraero officials. The sergeant asked for anonymity, but spent an afternoon at the airfield where
he heard the eyewitness accounts and took knowledge of the episode.
It appears that if this case is a hoax, Westendorf isn't the only one making it up.
