What is gained??? IDK. Pretty sure we could drop a lollipop on his doorstep undetected. But like anything, pilots need airtime to stay current. Which explains a lot of helicopters flying over small towns. Aircrew family birthdays... They have to fly somewhere.

And then perhaps one thing to fly over friendly skies, a little more intense training flying near un friendly skies.

I'm sure it is. If fact, I think I read that somewhere in a manual too, somewhere in my travels.

See, the thing is...when it's a hostile nation led by a notably unstable little dictator that is known for his temper and lack of self control, the world over, the question of what there is to gain takes on new meaning.

It would be accurate to JUST ask what could be gained ..if we were doing this across the Bearing Straight against Russian air space and air defense networks (as they DID start doing back to us from time to time, starting a few years ago). Running American strategic bombers against Russian airspace would annoy Putin, as it annoys the US when Russians do it (See Guam flyover for a doozy here recently). Nothing more would happen though, and our pilots get their flight time with real, honest to god air defense systems painting their aircraft to kill them.

In North Korea...it won't simply annoy, as we know as fact from past experience of doing precisely this. It'll provoke. It has before. Multiple times. It's insanity, by definition, to think doing so again will bring different end results.

They need their flight hours. Absolutely. They don't need to be used as pawns in a cheap board game to help raise tensions in the process, IMO. Our military has become toy soldiers to some people...to play with as their whims strike.

There is a point, I believe, where a match-up becomes so totally absurd for one side being overwhelming to the other? Demonstrations like this may show more about the insecurities suffered by the leader of the demonstration nation ...more than the one being demonstrated to.

We can literally nuke life off Earth...several times over...and with the Russian weapons added? A couple dozen times over...if dispersed for that purpose, anyway. No one has any question what we have, what we can do or what time frame would be involved for flight time from Whiteman AFB to Pyonyang, or Guam to Pyongyang. He can probably table top his own life expectancy in different scenarios to the minute.

Why push? What is gained?

I am not a military strategist in any way but we have these war games showcasing our WMD's (oops, I mean Weapons of Global Peace, not to be confused with anything we may have gutted a country or two over) and we move a lot of hardware around to do them, right in front of everyone. So, the eyes are on us as we move our mighty bomber fleets and munitions in bulk and then we drop a few teaser bombs so that all eyes remain there. This could be a good way to stockpile US assets in a buildup to a new war or conflict without actually declaring it so if we decide against it later, we save face by not having shouted our true intentions.
This may give us some positioning near China and Russia (I know not so close but perhaps enough) that we could strike if needed but the real deal is with what is not there, perhaps the B2's and other more stealthy units are on the move elsewhere while the world watches the joint bombing drills.

That's possible..but not very logical. We don't need a cover, to be honest. We are publicly in the process of shifting manpower to Guam in some ways and around Japan in others. We're looking at different accommodations around Okinawa, while the locals just look to a day they can wave goodbye entirely and forever. (badly worn welcomes saved for another day).

We also, if you recall and think back, built and deployed the Missile Defense systems during the last crisis that all but clipped Kims little wings right in the nest. In fact, a lot of tension surrounded that because timing was everything. Prior to the missile defense covering Japan and Guam, he could have hit either and response was our only option. Nothing to prevent or stop the attack. In theory...that's now different. This..all from the last "in his face or else" crisis the US and the DPRK went through just recently.

North Korea has now fired missiles and mortars in the general direction (very general) of our joint exercises. It's nothing threatening per say, but Kim thinks it is, and he means it to scare the powers into bending to his silly little will. He needs humored to SOME degree...so keep the little teapot from going to full boil.

Flying bombers under "theoretical" nuclear weapons load isn't keeping teapots from boiling. It's throwing all burners to Max heat and getting out the popcorn for the show to follow. (sigh)

You are right, he is bat# crazy. I hope we are not using our guys as pawns. Send up a couple NK fighters or AA and paint our planes... fire at will.

I think Russia and America had respect for each other. I remember seeing on tv about a U2 being escorted out of Russian airspace.

I have home movies of russian migs flying over my dads spy station in Turkey. There was mutual respect.

Maybe we just to put the little feller down before he hurts himself

That is stupid.
If I was in charge. I'd put one lone sniper in NK.
And have that sniper shoot a glass that was sitting next to Kim.
Then I'd send Kim a very nice set of glasses with a nice note that said I heard his glass broke.
Here's some of mine.

Put that punk on notice.

I dought a 50 year old jet is going to impress anybody. The US has several ways to deliver a nuke without risking a flight crew. Dear leaders people would not even be aware of what's going on and he's too insane to care. On a side note,, South Korea can build cars and send them around the world so why are we still helping them defend their border? They should be able to handle anything the north can send across the border.

Putin took Crimea in a day without a shot being fired.

Obama will drop practice bombs to impress a madman who feeds family members to starving dogs. Yeah, I'm sure lil-kim, China and Putin will be real scared.

What it comes down to is this, love him or hate him, Putin has nads the size of watermelons, and Obama, about the size of raisins. Putin knows this, thus, the reason for his actions. He knows his weaponry is inferior to Obama's, but he knows Obama doesn't have the guts to even try to do anything about it.

BTW, I love B52s. They've been around for 60+ years, and still do a helluva job. It's awesome how they just plug all the new tech into them. What a workhorse. Bombs away Obomba!

Nikkea got part of this wrong. Anderson AFB on Guam has not had nuclear capability since late 1989 and all B-52Gs in Anderson's inventory have been modified to eliminate nuclear weapons. They now carry conventional Harpoon antiship weapons.

1. There haven't been B-52Gs in the inventory in over 20 years.

2. Guam has no B-52s based there. All the aircraft there are on TDY status and rotate through.

3. Some B-52s ARE nuclear capable. It's a tiny fraction now, but they are still nuclear capable.

How about we need to destroy a satellite or two...maybe the NK one in orbit...and show WTF we can still do. This is like beating the pet hamster of the friend of a bully.

That respect was bought in blood. A number of planes were shot down, including an unarmed RC-130, and a Korean Airlines 707.

As for the U-2 the only U-2 to overfly Russia that I heard of that might have been escorted was a NASA ER-2 in the 90s.

Hey there Slayer....I didnt think we have to show off our nuke capabilities. But then again...the country's people have been brainwashed so bad....it might be a good idea. But, I'd think even that would be censored to them as well?

I think its a lost cause. The only hope they have I believe is an overthrow from within...

All of that impressive capability would be made meaningless if the North Koreans were to provide nukes to "terrorists" that would smuggle them into the USA and detonate them in major cities. Maybe NYC and Washington?

Blame Al Qaeda.

An insane leader with nukes may not be as capable for war, but could be capable of inflicting severe damage.

Better send in Dennis Rodman again....

This is actually pretty pathetic.

Only an arrogant and stupid government would think they could diffuse tensions in a region by intentionally adding more firepower to a military drill in order to force a hostile state into obedience.

This plan will not work against North Korea.

If the USA wants to negotiate with North Korea, they should actually make some proper attempts at diplomacy. You know, try to talk to the North Korean government by seeking to establish basic relations. Right now, the USA is withholding diplomacy based on unrealistic expectations. North Korea will not relinquish its nuclear weapons, as they are a safeguard. The USA should accept that, and attempt to negotiate with the North Koreans anyway.

I understand that establishing relations with North Korea would be a tough deal, but any attempts at discussion is better than no attempts at all.

Its difficult to establish normal diplomatic relations when countries are at war. In case people forgot, the Korean war never ended - A cease fire is in effect.

Secondly, threatening to rain down nuclear rain by north Korea every other day and twice on their dear leaders birthdays are not conducive to an atmosphere of trust and compromise.

North Korea is a sovereign nation, as is S. Korea and the United States. Taking the US to task in this manner while demanding conciliatory action towards north Korea is a bit one sided is it not?

Also, in case you were not aware North Korea is on the verge of 2 more missile tests and has a nuke test planned. If they wish to show the world what they can do, then the Us has the same right does it not?

You want the US to accept North Korea has nuclear weapons. We already have, and by extension, we are demonstrating we also have nuclear weapons.

Secondly, It takes 2 to tango. Simply telling the US to negotiate with North Korea does not mean North Korea wants to talk. By the way, proper talks is a 2 way road.
