Well if Bush/Obama/House of Saud is allowed to annex countries to corporations all over middle east then why should there be any issue with Russia doing it. And the stink of three digit agencies are all over the last 10 so called revolutions in the world. Rinse and repeat.

Pot calling the kettle black?

It's not about right or wrong, you have to read between the lines. It's about leverage. Whoever has the most leverage wins. And if there's a debate to who that is, you have wars, sanctions and a host of other issues that end up hurting everyone.

If Russia had won the cold war it would probably be them doing the same thing against western interests.

I don't understand why people think Russia is losing?

the Ukraine does not have the power or the nerve to remove Russia from Crimea.
the USA and UK are not going to risk a war to push Russia out of the Crimea.
The Majority of Crimea is Russian
Elements of the Ukrainian army, navy and air force are defecting to Crimea
Ukraine doesn't have a working government
If any bullets are fired, you'll see droves of Ukrainians surrender or defecting to Ukraine.
Putin won this game a long time ago, which is why the West have no idea what to do and are using the media to try and frighten people.

the Russia stock market dropped because all the fear mongering in Western Media.
Look at the stock markets now Russia is UP 6%

Russia is in the driving seat and everyone else is a long way behind.

It is all about propaganda and making people pull for their team and not see the hypocrisy of their so called team. They are to hooked up on manipulators telling them "the truth" that they should believe. Joseph Goebbels would be amazed how well US have become in using and improving the method he used of manipulation in Nazi Germany. And the sheep cannot even see the information cage and the dogs guarding them.

Although I hate to use the Hitler analogy, the Russians are in the position the Germans were when they annexed the Sudetenland. They won territory without firing a shot and were welcomed as liberators. Let's see how the Russian public feels when their boys start dying.

All based on the usual amount of conspiracy evidence ie zero!

I'm not going to get into a bitching fest based on zero evidence it's pointless. I will remind you of one thing. The protest in Ukraine had been going on for several weeks until one day the pro russian not pro US president passed a law that declared the protests "by terrorists" illegal (note the use of the word terrorist to justify the unjustifiable). The protestors went ape, the violence escalated, the law was recinded pretty damn quick but by then the whole situation had escalated out of control.

No amount of ficticious US under hand dirty tricks could have resulted in the change that that Yanukovych himself provoked !! I mean come on DUH!

Haven't you noticed that throughout the world across all cultures people have started to get very p..ed off with the their leaders whether elected or not. They bigger the corruption, the bigger lies the more p..ed off they are. The Ukraine is yet another country whose tired and p..ed off citizens have had enough.

It will be interesting to see whether Russia's economy will survive. If they dump their dollars, no-one will take rubles. What will they use for international trade? RMBs?

God the propaganda from Russia is never ending.

Apparently Putin is now stating there are no Russian forces in Crimea. All forces present are Ukrainian self defense forces. So if something sparks an encounter, Putin will play it off as Ukrainian government attacking ethnic Russians.

Apparently the total number of self defense force volunteers in Crimea range upwards of.... wait for it..... 6,000 members.

Self-defense forces ranks swell in anticipation of Crimea showdown with radicals

The Crimean popular army made up of locals and former Ukrainian armed forces braces for possible impact with right-wing radicals making their way toward the region.

The situation at checkpoints in the south-Ukrainian autonomous republic is tense. There are growing local fears of a collision between the popular self-defense forces and the right-wing separatists from the mainland. Two roads lead into the region. A growing number of locals of all walks of life and varying military experience are beginning to man the checkpoints.

“We want peace in our country, we don’t want what was happening in Kiev, we don’t want people to be hit with Molotov cocktails, or be shot or killed,” Aleksandr, a local resident, told RT.

“I don’t want war, but if it happens, no one will ask us, I guess.”

They team up with members of the disbanded Berkut security forces and other units loyal to the Crimean government. Just the past week has seen officers resigning en masse to join up with this people’s army. Even Cossacks in their traditional wear have started popping up among the ranks.

Putin Says Those Aren't Russian Forces In Crimea

Russian soldiers have not occupied government buildings and surrounded Ukrainian military bases on the Crimean Peninsula, Russian President Vladimir Putin insisted Tuesday during a news conference near Moscow at which he gave an account of recent events that contradicts reports from the ground.

Instead, he told reporters that the heavily armed men are "local self-defense forces."

What's more, anything Russia has done, Putin said without offering specifics, has been part of a "humanitarian mission" to protect ethnic Russians in Crimea.

But even as he said that no Russian troops have been involved in the latest events in Crimea, Putin drew comparisons that would seem to indicate they had been. "Our actions are often described by the West as not legitimate, but look at U.S. operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya," he said, according to a BBC translation of his comments. "Our actions are legitimate from the point of view of international law, because Ukraine's legitimate president asked us for help. ... Defending these people is in our interests ... we do not want to 'enslave' anyone."

Putin made the claims about a lack of involvement by Russian forces even though Russian military helicopters have been seen in the skies over Crimea, Russian trucks have been seen moving the armed men to key locations, and the soldiers in unmarked uniforms speak Russian and in some cases have told reporters and local residents that they are members of the Russian military.

Other Highlights -

— Is Putin concerned about a war breaking out? "No, because we will not go to war with the Ukrainian people." (The Guardian)

— Does he think that ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled to Russia last week, has a political future? No, "and I have told this to him. ... He would have been killed in Ukraine had we not helped him." (BBC News)

— Sanctions against Russia would make matters worse. "All threats against Russia are counterproductive and harmful," he said, while adding that Russia is ready to host the G-8 summit in June — but if western leaders do not want to come, "they don't need to." (Reuters)

— Russia is not going to try to annex Crimea, Putin said. (BBC News)

The Russian leader's news conference followed word from Moscow that "tens of thousands of Russian troops participating in military exercises near Ukraine's border," inside Russia, are returning to their bases.

I don't know how this man can talk and people in the room not laugh at him.

So... Crimea has seceded from Ukraine, but it is the troops from Kiyev that are the "separatists." They can't even keep their own rhetoric straight.

But the difference is that when in the US the people get pissed of like occupy wall street then there is no real change and the controlled media is able to avert the change but in Ukraine they seem to be very bad at averting like the western media do. US agencies create the flame and the western propaganda machine makes sure the flame is not averted.

It gets scary when you look at it like this. There is an upside, but it is so horrible, I shudder to think about it all that much. The only upside is that he wishes to take control of Europe, not just the Ukraine. The upside, from Putin's point of view, is that he could gain large amounts of natural resources.

As you say, he had to know that the West would react, and the easiest way to react for the West in the modern age, is the pocket book. He either didn't care, as he knew Russia was about to gain massive amounts of new territory, and resources. Or, he's stupid. And, I have never been one to suggest that Putin is stupid.

Currency fluctuation is nothing. That's not where they are going to be hit (not the only place anyway.) It's a small indicator but what lays in the pipeline if this confrontation goes out of hand is much worse for Russia.

*Note, I understand the bias in this article, but that's kind of the point. This will become defacto information so long as the wave of influence runs with it, making it self fulfilling.

While attention initially focused on Russia's direct economic and business interests in Ukraine, it is now shifting towards the broader question of Russia's economic ties with the West and how disrupting them threatens to derail a struggling economy that is already near stagnation.

It hasn't taken long for Russian financial markets to react to developments at the weekend, when Putin won parliamentary approval for military action in Ukraine as Russian forces consolidated control over Crimea, raising the prospect of a real war with Ukraine and a new Cold War with the West.

Moscow share price indexes plunged on Monday by over 10 percent, while the central bank has dramatically raised interest rates and spent an estimated $10 billion in reserves to defend the rouble after it hit a record low.

Analysts warn that steps already taken to defend the rouble threaten to push the economy into recession. If East-West tensions persist, they could further deter foreign investment, perpetuate economic stagnation and perhaps ultimately undermine Russia's own political stability.

This stuff is all similar to high school politics. You don't want to be the person ousted from the "in-crowd".

Apparently you do not know how to read a chart. I was trying to be kind by focusing on a stretch where the value of the ruble was relatively high. Your chart shows that its value had been plunging steadily all year, indicating an increasingly weak economy. Politicians often start wars to stimulate the economy. You-know-who did in 1938. I was also being kind by not pointing out that your claim that the Russian markets rose by 6% overlooked the fact that they still had not recovered from the 12% drop the day before. In fact, the past year has been a disaster for the Russian markets:

Your own source.

It is no wonder that the oligarchs running Russia-- and who up until a few days ago were running Ukraine-- keep their money overseas, usually in dollars.

Yes that is correct, Russia (like the world) is struggling economically.

But its ruble is not as unstable as you say it is.

If you look at this week, where the fluctuation is between .02775 and .0271 its tiny compared to the 12 month amount where it has fluctuated from .0325 to .0275.
.02775 and .0271 for a country where mass hysteria is telling the world they are invading Europe like ''Hitler'' is a pretty measured fluctuation.

Its hardly unstable. Nothing has changed inside Russia, the world got spooked by this constant drivel of BS from America, Americans and stupid fools on the internet saying things like

Putin is going after the Jews
Putin has militarily invaded Ukraine
Putin planned this long before it happened
