The lawful government in Kiev has asked for NATO assistance to protect their national / territorial integrity. Nikita Khrushchev, when he was running the USSR, gave the Crimea to Ukraine as a gift (being Nikita Khrushchev was from there - Ukraine). From that moment, Russia lost all claims to that area.

Taking a Country by a Coup and not Election, does not = a Lawful Government.

The government of the USSR gave Ukraine the Crimea.
The government of Ukraine lawfully removed the President of Ukraine.
The Crimea region, which is subordinate to Kiev, acted illegally when requesting Russian assistance.
Russian response is an invasion / unlawful occupation.

Just because the former President of Ukraine refuses to accept he was booted from office, does not make him a government in exile, nor does it allow him to speak for all Ukrainians.

Taking the Crimea by force / invasion does not make Russia's actions lawful.

Putin violated every law he could have with this stunt. The whole world came against Saddam for invading Kuwait. This is the same situation. Not one person was under threat, not even the navy bases Russia had there.

People think nothing will be done to save Ukraine however, once Putin crosses into Ukraine proper NATO will act. NATO will not sit back and let Russia move west in that big of a way. Most people have no clue how large Ukraine is and what it represents as a strategic stronghold. Not to mention the dam treaty we have to insure that Ukraine is not invaded just like this.

Just a strong show of navy support would send Putin running with his tail between his legs.

The Ukrainian constitution states otherwise. Or are we ignoring that as well because it throws a hitch into the Russian PR campaign?

You may be right but all the MSM media here in the U.S. is saying not a chance NATO will get involved. There's no saying what Putin plans as far as going into Ukraine proper.. I would think his main "interests" in this case don't spread to that region..However, if there is a military exchange in the Crimea with Ukrainian and Russian forces it would seem a possibility, no?

Anyway, all I'm hearing from talking heads, politicians and "journalists" from media here in the west is talk. The tough talk might continue but it's not looking like any military intervention via NATO is even on the table at this time.

You greatly underestimate Russian capabilities. A show of naval force is going to do sweet #*!$ all to dissuade Putin. He will defend the Russian naval base to the last man, and he knows that he shares a border with the Ukraine. If a full out conventional conflict were to occur (God forbid), the Russians could take and hold the Ukraine very easily. It would take a world war to oust them. They can send troops, armor, and air power streaming over the border in an instant, something the US can't do in the same numbers or the same time frame. It would be a total nightmare for Europe and plunge the world into chaos (and possibly result in the complete and total extinction of our species via nuclear holocaust).

The nazi war machine at the height of it's power couldn't finish off the Russians (even with the aid of the other axis powers), so it would not be a walk in the park for the Americans by any stretch.

The bravado and saber rattling needs to be reigned in here. I'm astounded that there is still a cowboy mentality present in many American minds. Yes, the U.S is still the worlds greatest military power. No, that is not going to matter if nukes start flying. Diplomacy is the answer here. A war between Russia and the U.S would assuredly embroil the entire earth, and would likely end in all of us dying. Nobody wins in that scenario, no matter who has the biggest missiles. A schlong waving contest isn't going to solve anything.

I completely forgot the UN has its own news service.

UN News

As Security Council holds urgent talks, UN officials urge dialogue to resolve Ukraine crisis

1 March 2014 – Top United Nations officials on Saturday called for direct dialogue between all concerned amid the growing tensions in the Crimea region of Ukraine, as the Security Council held urgent talks for the second day in a row on the crisis.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who is “gravely concerned” about the deterioration of the situation, spoke by telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin today.

“It is crucial to restore calm and proceed to an immediate de-escalation of the situation. Cool heads must prevail and dialogue must be the only tool in ending this crisis,” Mr. Ban said afterwards, adding that he appealed to Mr. Putin to urgently engage in direct dialogue with the authorities in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

In a statement issued earlier in the day by his spokesperson, the Secretary-General reiterated his call for the full respect for and preservation of Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Thanks for the link. Looks like they are just repeating what Obama said. No mention of action by NATO.

Australia had a regiment of troops attached to the British army in the last Crimean war, but that was 160 years ago.
I guess we could end up back there this time as a US ally or a Commonwealth thingy, if it turns really bad.
Just remember that in the case of a thermo nuclear attack, simply duck under a table and you will be fine.

LOL

I needed that.. Thanks.

No, the neo-Nazi coup in Crimea is not legitimate. The Ukrainian government in Kiev is.

We don't use swords anymore, so feel free to keep those all to yourselves.

Russian paranoia worked better during the cold war... Now it just comes across as crazy talk.
