A Kremlin aide has been quoted as saying that if the United States were to impose sanctions on Russia over Ukraine, Moscow might be forced to drop the dollar as a reserve currency and refuse to pay off any loans to US banks

Sergei Glazyev, who is often used by the authorities to stake out a hardline stance but does not make policy, was cited by RIA news agency as saying Moscow could recommend that all holders of US treasuries sell them if Washington freezes the US accounts of Russian businesses and individuals.

The US senate foreign relations committee is preparing legislation to provide support to Ukraine and consulting the Obama administration on possible sanctions against individual Russians, the committee’s chairman said on Monday.

“In the instance of sanctions being applied to stated institutions, we will have to declare the impossibility of returning those loans which were given to Russian institutions by US banks,” RIA quoted Glazyev as saying.

“We will have to move into other currencies, create our own settlement system.”

He added: “We have excellent trade and economic relations with our partners in the east and south and we will find a way to reduce to nothing our financial dependence on the United States but even get out of the sanctions with a big profit to ourselves.”

Meanwhile, another Russian news agency, Interfax, is reporting that Russia has already taken economic action against the US by suspending a decision to to lift ban on US pork imports.

Ukraine column has reached Russian checkpoint. Russians begin firing in the air. Ukrainians keep marching.

Russians call commander to negotiate. Troops have RPGs and machine guns trained on the column of unarmed Ukrainian soldiers.

Russians back down, allow 10 Ukraine soldiers to take up positions at occupied base, but still awaiting orders from Moscow.

Ukraine commander demands to guard the base jointly with Russians, who pledge to give their commanders' response by 12:00, in 2 hours.

You know, a thought just occurred to me for possible extra info out of the area: Shortwave radio. This receiver is in the Netherlands, and should be able to pick up potential amateur signals from Ukraine just fine. websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901... If anyone's interested in surfing the shortwave stations, that should do it for the region.

To keep on topic, the troops doing the border exercise being sent back to their bases strikes me as essentially a flipping of the proverbial bird. Something tells me they aren't going to be at their bases long if nothing diplomatic, and productive, is accomplished...

Link to Putin's Press Statement. Reports are the RT site is being attacked by hackers.

rt.com...

Putin’s address is due to be livestreamed here on Russia Today’s website. A few minutes ago it was showing reporters waiting for the president but the picture has since been lost. It appears the site may have been attacked by hackers.

Russia Today was hacked overnight on Saturday with references to “Russia” and “Russians” in headlines replaced with the words “Nazi” and “Nazis”.

I reiterate, this is their fight.

Ukraine if you recall was once part of Russia, and part of it still is for all intents and purposes. There is nothing in the Ukraine I want and if there is it can be purchased honestly. AND we cannot afford a war. A good majority of the Ukrainian citizens apparently do not want to be independent of Russia, so let them decide.. its another civil war from the looks of it, and not any of our business.

The only reason any of the west would have anything to do with it is corporate interest, and look at how well begging the west turns out for most of the world anymore... beholden with all your resources to your new master... I am pretty sure the Ukraine would be better of without any of us to be honest.

What a difference how Putin does a Q&A in reflection to Obama.
Call me what you like, but Putin almost sounds human.

And some of the things he says are true, I recall them myself.

I was thinking the same, no teleprompter with this guy. No matter what your personal opinion of the guy is he is a strong leader and highly intelligent.

Try to disagree with this :
Putin continues:

Why was this done? President Yanukovych, before Poland Germany and France, and before my representative, ombudsmen Lukin, signed an agreement with the opposition, by which, I want to note, Yanukovych basically gave up his power, he aggreed to all demands of opposition, early elections, to return to the constitution of 2004, … he didn’t give one illegal command to shoot unfortunate protestors.

They immediately seized his residence rather than giving him a chance to fulfil the agreement. .. He didn’t have any chance of being reelected. … Why did they need to take unconstitutional steps and bring the country into the chaos that now reigns there? … It was a stupid act.

The Russian president says there are “radical extremists masked and armed on the streets of Kiev”.

Putin calls the Ukrainian government “crooks”:

I sympathise with the people on Maidan even though I don’t recognise the change in regime … People are not demanding renovations of the facade of power, they want cardinal changes, because they are used to crooks taking over from other crooks...

Putin says:

Of course people wanted change. But it cannot impose illegal change ...you need to use only constitutional means.
