Lots of soldiers have beards... why would Russia be any different?

Don't know, it's new to me.
In my regular army service and in two wars that I've been we were always requiered to be shaved.

Depends on your mission ops for example in Afghanistan our unit was allowed to grow a beard two reasons one helped us blend in we could literally hide in plain sight. The other in Afghanistan beards are seen as a symbol of manhood. So depends on where we were as to whether you shaved.mostly because However in iraq the rules were different mostly because of the threat of chemical weapons must stay shaved to don your mask. Usually only special operations ever gets this choice in the first place because there mission brief is different.

Some of the "green men" in the pictures from E. Ukraine we have seen around recently seem to have been identified in this article:

From the identified militants, a few notes can be made from the following gunmen who appear to be connected to the raids in Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. For one, not all are from Russia. While some may be local radicals, others appear to come from Belorechensk in Russia, or have connections to related neo-Cossack groups. This does not necessarily exonerate Russian state involvement, however. While it’s been known that military veterans and Russian ‘tourists’ have been actively involved for some time, the presence of Registered Cossacks of the Russian Federation connects Russia officially to the ongoing crisis. Registered Cossack organizations enjoy financial and organizational support from the authorities, including monthly salary as police auxiliaries. This, of course, isn’t the first controversial deployment of Cossack forces, who made a name for themselves on the world stage enforcing the law in Sochi.

Another point of interest is the insignia seen on a number of the gunmen. For clarity’s sake, the symbol is that of Andrei Shkuro‘s ‘Terek Wolf Company’, a detachment of White emigre Cossacks who fought for Nazi Germany during the second world war.

There are 2 practical reasons, why regular soldiers need to shave:
1. Discipline. A shaved soldier looks sharper and a good santiation discipline boosts morale, because things can't be that bad when you have time to shave, shower etc...
2. The gasmask fits better in case you need it.

Naturally in regions, where you need a beard to be accepted as a man (or where you mission parameters needs you to better mingle with the civilians), these 2 reasons don't matter at all.

Well he may just be paranoid, coupled with the fact that he is forbidden from entry in the Russian Federation, including Crimea, until 2019, announced yesterday.

But seeing as how there are reports from Crimea that there are deportation plans for the Tatars, those that do not accept Russian citizenship losing their jobs, some of them being assaulted, the information about the FSB surveillance on Tatar mosques may not be far-fetched.

Separatists Claim to Have Occupied Akhmetov-owned Mine

A Luhanks-based separatist group 'Luhansk Guard', has posted on Facebook, claiming to have seized a site belonging to the Krasnodonugol coal mining company, owned by Ukrainian oligarch, Rinat Akhmetov.

The Facebook post appeals for help from supporters after announcing that the building in Krasnodon was occupied following a rally at 16:00 local time today. Barricades were reportedly set up at 23:00. The post says that the protesters' demands are an increase in wages and the "lifting of sanctions on workers".

The Krasnodonugol mine has faced criminal investigation in the past for safety violations following the deaths of 16 miners in an explosion in 2011.

SBU Chief: As Many as 100 Russian Military Officers at Work in Ukraine

In a web chat hosted by the Atlantic Council today, Valentyn Nalyvaichenko, the head of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), claimed that there are as many as 100 Russian military intelligence or special forces officers operating in Ukraine at the moment.

Nalyvaichenko said that separatist actions in Slavyansk were being lead by a group of 30 GRU officers, lead by Colonel Igor Stelkov, who the SBU claimed to have identified via phone recordings on April 14. Nalyvaichenko said today that the SBU has arrested and is interrogating three GRU officers, currently being held in Kiev. The SBU chief described an extensive network of Russian subterfuge in Ukraine:

"For the last - we now understand -- two or three years," officers of Russia's GRU "have created very covert but well-structurized networks with agents, with pro-Russian organizations, involving in such illegal activity many Ukrainians," he said. Those networks are most developed in Crimea, which Russia seized and annexed in March, and in eastern Ukraine, Nalyvaichenko said. "Russian military officers … are the main provocateurs and main organizers" of the uprisings in the east, recruiting sympathizers and paying local criminal gangs to help attack local governments. "We for sure know now who are they, I mean those Russian officers," Nalyvaichenko said. "They are very dangerous, well armed, [and] for years before prepared to do what they are doing now."

Nalyvaichenko also mentioned that he was satisfied with the "intensive" and "well organised" intelligence cooperation with the United States. Other topics of discussion include the relationship between economic hardship and propaganda in the eastern regions, the difficulties Ukraine has had in responding to the Russian threat, and Ukraine's hopes for help from international monitoring missions.

Lavrov: If Russian troops attacked, we'll respond in line with int'l law

Russia will retaliate if it is attacked and the interests of the Russian people are threatened, Sergey Lavrov told RT. He alleged the US has a hand in the current stand-off in Ukraine between the coup-appointed government and anti-Maidan activists. In an interview with RT’s Sophie Shevardnadze, Sergey Lavrov said that if Russian territory comes under attack, then Moscow will respond in line with international law. “If we are attacked, we would certainly respond. If our interests, our legitimate interests, the interests of Russians have been attacked directly, like they were in South Ossetia for example, I do not see any other way but to respond in accordance with international law,” he said. Speaking about the buildup of troops on the Russian-Ukrainian border, Lavrov added that Russian troops have not crossed into Ukraine and remain on Russian territory. “Russian citizens being attacked is an attack against the Russian Federation,” he told RT. The Foreign Minister also spoke about American involvement in the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, accusing Washington of trying to manipulate the situation. “There is no reason not to believe that the Americans are running the show,” said Lavrov, referencing US Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to Kiev and its coincidence with the renewed counter-terror operation on activists in East Ukraine. “It’s quite telling they chose the moment of the Vice President of the US’ visit to announce the resumption of this operation because the launching of this operation happened immediately after John Brennon’s [head of the CIA] visit to Kiev,” said Lavrov. The situation in Ukraine is just another example of Washington trying to gain ground in the geopolitical fight, the Russian Foreign Minister said. “Ukraine is just one manifestation of the American unwillingness to yield in the geopolitical fight. Americans are not ready to admit that they cannot run the show in each and every part of the globe from Washington alone,” said Lavrov, adding Washington’s “ready-made solutions” cannot remedy a crisis that it does not understand.

Yes I read that too. Makes it easy for them to claim that the separatists are citizens of Russia. Looks like they have made their mind up to invade Ukraine. What do you think?

-troops still on border, and now Russia accepts that.
-Putin few days back said that there are many requests for Russian intervention and he does not want to use troops but can if needed, a veiled threat.
-Russia today launched a naval exercise in the Caspian sea.
-Ukraines not backing down either. They relaunched the military anti terror ops.
-And today finally Lavrov gave a direct threat of military invasion.

From what I can understand in this video, uploaded on April 17, we can see a Horlivka city council member in a dispute with pro-Russian/separatists:

In this news piece it is pointed out that he is one of the men found dead near Horlivka, from the translation:

Today came the Slavic orientation, where a man was found dead, very similar to Gorlovskoy council deputy Volodymyr Rybak, who was kidnapped by unknown people in Gorlivka masked. The body was found on the bank of the Seversky Donets. Now we carry out the investigation, as was previously registered criminal proceedings under Part 2 of the Criminal Code st.146 Ukraine "unlawful imprisonment or kidnapping," - said the head Gorlovskogo MU Kryschenko Andrew, who is now at the hospital, but coordinates the work of law enforcement.

"It was hard opiznaty. But if he had lain in water for several days, then learn it very, very difficult, but in the DNA. But the body popped and you can learn. Rather, he was killed on April 19. People wanted to cover up the crime, they are prepared, it's not some robbers and drug addicts. What they are unarmed man did this on their conscience, "- said the head of the criminal police Gorlovskogo GU German attack that worked with fishermen.

In this incident conducted preliminary inquiry and taking steps to establish those involved in the murder.

Recall that in the Central City police department Gorlivka asked a local resident, a statement that the 17 April 2014 around 18.00 unknown persons kidnapped Gorlovskoy City Council deputy Volodymyr Rybak. In this incident opened criminal proceedings under Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine st.146.

According to him, he walked with Rybak on Pobeda when they stopped at the car, which went from unknown persons put MP in the car and took him to an unknown destination. To date, the mobile phone officials are not active.

Established that before the kidnapping Volodymyr Rybak tried to go to the Executive Committee, to take down the flag of the so-called "People's Republic of Donetsk", but at the entrance to the building on this occasion he had a conflict with representatives of the separatists.

Is the man in the video Vladimir Rybak or another that disappeared under similar conditions ?

Russian FM, Lavrov, doesn't deny the information that Russia has pulled more troops to the Ukrainian border:

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that his country has never denied the collection of additional troops to the border with Ukraine . The Minister said in an interview with the TV channel RT.
