It contradicts the latest word from the Acting President of Ukraine, who said he would support a referendum during the May elections.

Could it be possible the acting President of Ukraine made that statement to call Russia out? If Ukraine allows the referendum, it will be observed by international monitors, something I don't think would work in Russia's favor.

I think even if he agrees to it, Russia is going to take action before the elections.

it depends on what kind of referendum we're talking about.

I am sure there is a difference between referendum offered by government and referendum asked by protesters.

WWIII anyone? Slowly it looks like the international is community showing up in the area...

the West, USA, NATO guys will have to back down on this if we don't want to see the War.

strategically speaking, this is last chance Russia has before it's eliminated from the scene of world powers and I am sure they will use it.

I have to ask - Why NATO?

Why cant Russia pull its forces back from the border?

because their forces are in RUSSIA?

NVM. Mis-read. Russian forces are in Ukraine, NATO is in Europe.

I did and my question stands. Why should NATO back down?

The question becomes more relevant with the mindset you just described for Russia with it being close to the end on the world stage. I can see Putin behaving like a wounded animal, lashing out at anything and everything as it goes down. To be honest I would prefer the risk and have forces ready / close to counter anything than stand down and get blindsided.

Russia started this mess, and to suggest those nations who don't agree should just walk away to keep the peace is, with all due respect, and insane idea.

The fact of the matter is, if Russia doesn't back off the S will hit the F and Russia KNOWS it. This is not just about Ukraine. The whole region is surrounded by NATO countries who joined NATO for a reason.

Im not sure what stuns me more...

Ukraine's restraint while being invaded or the restraint its non military forces have demonstrated.

No restraint here, they are afraid to act. If it wasnt for the Russian army, they would have anhialated every protestor.

NATO Secretary General concerned about escalation in eastern Ukraine

I am extremely concerned about the further escalation of tension in Eastern Ukraine. We see a concerted campaign of violence by pro-Russian separatists, aiming to destabilise Ukraine as a sovereign state. The reappearance of men with specialised Russian weapons and identical uniforms without insignia, as previously worn by Russian troops during Russia's illegal and illegitimate seizure of Crimea, is a grave development.

I call on Russia to de-escalate the crisis and pull back its large number of troops, including special forces, from the area around Ukraine's border.

Any further Russian military interference, under any pretext, will only deepen Russia's international isolation.

It's painfully obvious that un-marked Russian troops are involved. What's interesting is how much talking NATO keeps doing. I think when they do decide to act, that's it, not more talking, it's a done deal.

And most Ukrainians want force to be used, they are running out of patience, we can see Euromaidan anti government protests if this goes on. Turchinov is being seen as very weak.

While NATO seems quiet, their media center shows interesting developments -

NATO

Go to Newsroom and then select press releases. Their NATO reps are making the rounds that is for sure.

Do you think its possible the Ukrainian response (or lack of) is to counter something else? If they push their forces into the south and east, it leaves other areas of Ukraine wide open.

I am starting to wonder if -
A - The reports on the CIA director being in Ukraine are true
B - He was there to brief their leadership on Russian movement / positions?

Also do not forget that Ukraine was complaining of the lack of intelligence support from USA, they accused USA. Of not sharing intelligence reports with them.

Correct because of the possibility of Russian infiltration. Instead of giving them detailed information, they can get an in person briefing. Secondly im sure the CIA and Defense Agencies have different methods of intelligence collection. Coming from a non military source might be more palatable to the US.

The photos released showing Russian positions came from non military sources as well.
