Lots of information coming out lately, and im a bit confused. Are the Russians just sitting in their naval base, or are they running around in Crimea? I saw this come out of Fox News a few minutes ago, hopefully someone can clear this up for me. Is the Russian base in Simferopol or is it in Sevastopol...or do they have bases in both?

Russian troop convoy on road to Crimea's capital as Putin rejects calls to pull back

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine – Associated Press journalists on Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula have seen a convoy of hundreds of Russian troops heading toward the regional capital, Simferopol.

On the road from Sevastopol, the Crimean port where Russia maintains a naval base, to Simferopol on Sunday morning, AP journalists saw 12 military trucks carrying troops, a Tiger vehicle armed with a machine gun and also two ambulances.

1st off asen_y2k great thread S&F!
Looking at current events I am left asking the question who would benefit from a confrontation between East and West? There has been years of trying to provoke Russia into a confrontation over anything mostly coming from various neo-con and neo-lib circles or to put it a little more bluntly Cold-War fetishists.

Correction just coming in on TV. 10 mins back:

The Russians stormed the Ukrainian military unit, shots heard- UDARivets

edit on 2/3/14 by asen_y2k because: (no reason given)

"Ukrainian parliamentarian officer captured. One of the buildings was on fire. Kamaz Russian burst onto the territory of the town through the checkpoint for transport. Blocked our entry with APCs. Thus cut off from the main Russian Kamaz forces that were on the perimeter, "- said UDARivets.

Happening in Sevastopol now.

And so it begans ! HOLD FAST ,STAND STRONG UKRAINE ! Victory OR PARADISE !!!

No the thing is, since the Russians entered few days back inside of Crimea, most Ukrainian military in the region defected, or did what the Russians ordered them to do. So it was a very peaceful invasion.

But this is the first time both countries armed forces actually engaged each other in combat.

Hello Asen -

Thanks for the live updates, your reporting of the situation is better than anything coming from western media or even other outlets on the internet ATM, many of us are watching closely so thanks for keeping us updated.

Quick question for you. Earlier, an ATS member reported that there was some Russian military buildup in the region of Chernihiv (sp) about 200 miles north of Kiev. Have you heard anything to validate this? Nothing yet has been reported to substantiate the claims so I was wondering if sources inside Ukraine have yet or if it was just rumor. Thanks again!

So you have never created anti-american threads?? okay, I must be imagining all that... What's funny is that if the roles were reversed and the US was doing this to some country you would be all over them...

So everyone believes that Russia has a military presence in Crimea, but without a declaration of war from Putin himself its not good enough for you...

I honestly can't believe you think that is a declaration of war from Ukraine.. Russia votes that military intervention would be okay, so Ukraine puts their own military on alert and you consider that them declaring war on Russia???
edit on 2-3-2014 by jhn7537 because: (no reason given)

You are American, so of course you will view any critical thread of your country as an anti-American piece. With that said, i have not made an 'anti-American' thread in quite some time.

No i wouldn't be all over the USA. I would be looking at the situation, and all the events which would occur, in order to make a decision.

No.

I do not think that what Ukraine done was a declaration of war. You are twisting my words. I said that it was a threat of war...and it was.

No, that's pure and simple defense. Do you sit on ur arse when someone breaks into your house until he states "hello, i'm breaking into your house". Nooooooo you nip that # in the arse.

Yes, "hello, i'm breaking into your house" is favorite cry of Americans voiced in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria. Number of civilians casualties in the millions.

Wow that was clever! and right on topic too!

Edit: I'm actually done and over with this argument. This situation in Ukraine seems to be quickly escalating, and It affects my job here in the US DIRECTLY. I have more important things to worry about than trolls.

Are you work in CIA. If not, please clear detail how it affects your work? all that is happening in Ukraine - it's merely the Ukrainians and the surrounding states to them, but not Americans.

I was asleep at that time. I could have missed any news which came and went.

But RT says

Unidentified fighters have been trying to block roads in Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, including the road leading to Crimea, Belgorod Governor Evgeny Savchenko told the Russia-24 news channel. “There are mobs of armed men who came out of nowhere and are staging provocations,” he said. “We are very concerned.” Border crossings between Russia and Ukraine are working with no delays, Russian customs service reported. On Saturday, 150 trucks and 66 cars passed through, with the largest traffic reported on the road connecting Kiev and Moscow. According to Russian Senator Evgeny Bushmin, more than 140,000 people have moved from Ukraine to Russia during the three months of Ukraine’s political upheaval. While many Ukrainians have relatives in Russia who can provide them with accommodation, local authorities in regions bordering Ukraine are concerned that an increased inflow of refugees may put extra strain on their resources.

Just coming in on RT:

Ukrainian armed forces dispatched to Crimea have started to switch sides on a massive scale, turning themselves over to the new Crimean government. As Interfax reports, many of the living quarters, as well as weapons and ammunition have been abandoned and taken over by the Crimean 'defense forces.'

Understood, I know it's early and I know the value of sleep, especially on the weekend.

Just FYI I'm referring to This Post.

Part of the quoted text from the source -

Gordonua.com, a web news site maintained by the editor of Gordon Boulevard, says they have a report from a local resident that at the border post of Senkova in Chernihiv Region, there are a lot of Russian APCs and buses with soldiers concentrated on the Russian side of the border.

The source linked -

The Interpreter

I felt it to be very relevant and concerning since this would surely escalate the situation in many of our minds. Please keep us updated if you see more developing from it. Thanks again for your updates!

Gordonua looks reputable, but maybe its a regional news outlet. We in the western part of Ukrainian have our own and other parts their own.

Please note, I am posting news from Ukrainian national TV channels and news media only.

Obama acknowledged the economic and cultural ties that unite Ukraine and Russia, but, in his opinion, to determine the future of the country should be its people, and reminded of the need to comply with international law.

The representative of the Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said Russia opposes imposed mediation to settle the situation around the Crimea.

According to Vitaly Churkin, Russia has an agreement with Ukraine on the presence of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol, and "we are acting under these arrangements." "With regard to mediation to settle the situation around the Crimea, the Crimean authorities should ask what they think about such a mission," - said Churkin.

Ukrainian armed forces dispatched to Crimea have started resigning on a massive scale, reports RIA Novosti.

Living quarters, weapons and ammunition have all been left under the protection of the so-called ‘self-defense forces.’

Letters of resignation have been coming in since early morning, as the self-defense forces continue to preserve order on the streets of Simferopol, RIA reported.

Since Thursday, the city’s Supreme Council and a number of other buildings have been occupied and guarded by the self-defense forces run by the local population.

Let's hope cool heads prevail and this conflict is averted.

But if push comes to shove, watch the skies. The U.S military has been itching for a situation like to occur so they can field test their latest black budget gadgetry.
