I agree; that's why military action is inevitable. Remember, the United States had no trouble rolling over Saddam Hussein. All it needs is an excuse. Putin is stupid enough to provide one eventually.

did you seriously just compared Iraq/Husein with Russia/Putin?

No, I'm just joking. The United States was afraid of Saddam Hussein.

I very much approve of the way you chose the word 'excuse', and not 'reason' or anything along those lines.

Thank you. I cannot understand why so many people believe the United States is a vicious, war mongering fascist nation that targets innocent civilians with smart bombs that can be delivered by remote control, used secret nuclear weapons in Iraq, sponsors terrorism and insurrection around the globe, went so far as to kill thousands of its own citizens in false flag attacks to justify going to war... and yet its just going to do nothing when a potential rival practically invites the US to destroy it. That sort of thinking is delusional.

We lose because we legislate ourselves into losses. Vietnam could have been a resounding victory but we allowed politics to dictate how we fight wars which leads to more casualties then they prevent!

but I'm expecting people to acknowledge that direct conflict with Russia would be very bad for any parties involved.

It would be terrible for Russia. All of the fighting will be taking place on the Black Sea. Russian sailors will die. The moment Putin tries to go nuclear, his own generals will turn on him. Wouldn't you? Or do you believe that stroking Putin's ego is worth destroying all life on Earth?

Out of interest what would you have done differently in Vietnam? It's hard to get people to do what you want even if it may be best for them in the end all that matters is what they think. I don't know much about the Soviet war in Afghanistan but I find it hard to believe they were restrained. In modern war I think it's very hard to control territory if they don't want you there.

The Chinese invasion of Vietnam was also a failure and the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan aren't what I would call resounding successes. Isn't it possible that new warfare tactics and the availability of RPGs and assault rifles have changed the game and powers of the modern world simply aren't capable of what previous powers could accomplish? That is my current theory on the issue anyway.

And you seem so confident of Russia's invincibility. Are you sure they don't need you at Pravda?

Edit to add: You still haven't answered my question. If you were a Russian general, and Putin ordered you to deploy nuclear weapons, would you do it, knowing that the retaliation from the US would be swift and merciless?

I guess the difference regarding Vietnam is that if the US fought the war with effectiveness, in essence destroying the North Vietnamese regime, allowing for the South to establish full governorship of the entire country, it would have been up to the South Vietnamese government to deal with the Guerrilla war that would have ensued. The US would have fulfilled its obligation of repelling the communist movement and take over of the country.

Russia is not a superpower.
USA is a superpower.

That still doesn't mean that USA would have won easily as you're suggesting, even without nuclear weapons.

The objectives for the United States would be extremely limited. Make the Russian occupation of Crimea unpleasant. Eventually, something would give and Putin would learn a valuable lesson. It's not as though the US has to send tanks to Moscow. All they need are a few aircraft carriers in the Black Sea.

The problem with your theory is it's probably the Russian generals who would think they could win a nuclear war rather than Putin. If the situation got out of control who knows who would end up in power. Some of the hardliners in Russia are far more extreme than Putin and believe Russia didn't bankrupt itself building nukes in the cold war to not ever use them.

I received the following in an email a long time ago but felt it was worth keeping...
QUOTE:
JFK'S
Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early 60's when
DeGaulle decided to pull out of NATO. DeGaulle said he wanted all US
Military out of France as soon as possible.

Rusk responded,

"Does that include those who are buried here?"

DeGaulle
Did not respond.

You
Could have heard a pin drop.

When in England ,

At a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the
Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of
'empire building' by George Bush.

He answered by saying,

"Over the years, the United States has sent many of
Its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom
Beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for
In return is enough to bury those that did not
Return."

You
Could have heard a pin drop.

There was a conference in France

Where a number of international engineers
Were taking part, including French and American. During a break,
One of the French engineers came back into the room saying, "Have you
Heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft
Carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he
Intend to do, bomb them?"

A Boeing engineer

Stood up and replied quietly: "Our carriers have three
Hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are
Nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to
Shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to
Feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand
Gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a
Dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and
From their flight deck. We have eleven such ships;

How many does France have?"
You
Could have heard a pin drop.

A U.S. Navy Admiral

Was attending a naval conference that included
Admirals from the U.S., English, Canadian, Australian and French
Navies At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large
Group of officers that included personnel from most of those countries.
Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a
French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many
Languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, "Why is it that
We always have to speak English in these conferences rather than
Speaking French?"

Without hesitating,

The American Admiral replied, "Maybe it's because the
Brit's, Canadians, Aussie's and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't
Have to speak German."

You
Could have heard a pin drop.

AND THIS STORY FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE ABOVE...

Robert Whiting,

An elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane.

At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport

In his carry on.

"You
Have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked
Sarcastically.

Mr. Whiting

Admitted that he had been to France
Previously.

"Then
You should know enough to have your passport ready."

The American said,

"The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it."

"Impossible..
Americans always have to show their passports on arrival in France !"

The American senior

Gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he
Quietly explained, ''Well, when I came ashore at OmahaBeach on D-Day in
1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchmen
To show a passport to."

You
Could have heard a pin drop.
