Ex Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yulia Tymoshenko, said today that she tried to stop the smuggling from Transnistria when she was in office. She also revealed that the smuggling (which "used to be run at a fantastic scale") was backed by high-ranked officials from Ukraine.

"The question of country integrity is one of the most essential to Ukraine," Tymoshenko stressed, providing details that she (as a prime minister) conducted a wide-scale action entitled "Stop contraband!"
“I can say that the Transnistrian section of our state border is really a vast white spot. Smuggling there--backed, by the way, by high-ranked officials from Ukraine--used to be run at a fantastic scale”, Tymoshenko revealed. “It is my conviction that Ukraine must restore law and order on that border, but only from the Ukrainian side of it, and to ensure movement of all freights with documents drawn up appropriately".
